  • Hi:

i am the parish administrator for Tulla which is a neighboring parish of  Feakle.  You can access some of the baptism records online for Feakle through the Clare County Library website www.clarecountylibrary.ie.  they were very generously donated by a Feakle person with local ancestry.  You will need to go into the genealogy tab on the website and that will direct you to what is available through the library online.  it is a wonderful site and full of information.  The baptism records in Feakle start in 1860, but if you look for the surname and try to get a match with the townland of Laccaroe, you might have some luck.  It will at least get you started.

If you have any difficulties, please get back to me and I'll try to help.

  • Hi Jane,

Just wanted to correct you; those Feakle baptisms, Feakle marriages, and most recently, Scariff marriages on the Clare County Library site have all been donated by a California man with Feakle ancestry.

    Best regards,

  • Hi James:

my apologies for wording that incorrectly!  I didn't like to put your name on the message even though I know that the writer will see it when she goes into look at the records online.

I hope that you are well.  I see that Feakle has a number of members which is great.  I might email you about this later today.

  • Hi Mary,

I am the new Feakle Parish Admin here and still finding my way around this site so have not really looked much at your request until now.  I do see a few things right off.  Your townland name IF your area of interest is really FEAKLE Parish is actually Laccaroe which is split in two, Laccaroe Upper and Laccaroe Lower.  The townland has lots of variant names.  In 1901 census it was enumerated as Laccarow and in 1911 as Lecarrow.  See National Archives sites below:

1911 censu return at NAI, Form N for this townland at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001799664/

1901 census return at NAI, Form N at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000486374/

I once received a great post from an excellent researcher titled "The six faces of Lecarrow."  I couldn't find it but just in case your parish of interest is NOT Feakle, you may need to consider that one of the other four LECARROWs may be your target.  The following is pasted here from www.seanruad.com

TownlandAKAAcresCountyBaronyCivil ParishPLUProvinceLecarrow Beg 116ClareIslandsKilmaleyEnnisMunsterLecarrow Lower 555ClareTulla UpperFeakleScarriffMunsterLecarrow More 117ClareIslandsKilmaleyEnnisMunsterLecarrow North 237ClareTulla UpperTullaTullaMunsterLecarrow South 106ClareTulla UpperTullaTullaMunsterLecarrow Upper 244ClareTulla UpperFeakleScarriffMunster

Since you are back to this person being born in 1834, you should be reviewing the Tithe Applotments (1820s - 1830s) which are online at the Clare Library site.  To make matters worse for you, Laccaroe in the Tithe records is actually only found in the notes.  Either to save time or to consolidate townlands with too small of a value to tax, several townlands were combined together.  Laccaroe is under the townland name of Lackarunoe which combines these 8 townlands together (Kyle, Rossinure, Lackaros Mountain, Clashmore, Gurrane, Coar, Lower Lackaroe (yours), and Rabbit Park).

The next thing you have to contend with is how many variants there on surnames. In the old records the person writing the name was rarely the same person the record detailed.  Many researchers have a tough time with this concept.  Although you found your person in USA records as Maloney, you really need to consider all the variants of this name and those unrecognized variants due to phonetic spellings, poor transcriptions of poor handwriting, misspellings, evolution of the name over time, anglicization of names, etc.  The name MALONEY may also be found as O'MALONEY, MOLONEY, O'MOLONEY, MOLONY, O'MOLONY.  All of these name spellings are the recognized variants.  Now you also need to consider the phonetic spellings and out and out misspellings.

But, back to your case, the Tithe records in the library site show a few possible people in townland of interest:

    - James (Jam's) and Martin (Mart'n) Molony of Lower Lackaroe which I've pasted below:

    See: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/tithe_applot/feakle_tab.htm

    SurnameForenameTitleTownlandParishNoteMolonyJam's LackarunoeFeakleLower Lackaroe, part; Jam's Molony & Mart'n MolonyMolonyMart'n LackarunoeFeakleLower Lackaroe, part; Jam's Molony & Mart'n Molony

One more thing, your townland name of Lacarua is likely just a poor transcription due to poor writing or poor reproduction of a record, or even just the result of a misspelling.  It could even be a name that was used for just some period of time. In some cases you may actually be seeing the Irish spelling be used.  I can't be sure of why the name you found is spelled this way, even if I saw the actual record.  :-)

I hope this helps. You may have a tough road ahead of you or you may just hit the jackpot in short order.  Keep an open mind and keep looking.

Now the next thing will be to find descendants hopefully in this townland and then in the Irish phone book. I will check for you the 1901 & 1911 census to see if you have any potential hits you should contact.  I will have a few more suggestions for you later.

    Best regards,

    James McNamara
