John Cusack or Cusick states on the 1900 US census that he emigrated from Longford, Ireland to New York City in 1844. He was born about 1837. He named his eldest son James. The next son was named John and the third was named Thomas. The eldest daughter was named Mary J.
Any information about a family named Cusick (possibly James Cusick) who emigrated in 1844 would be gratefully received!

Hi,
Thanks for your message.
Have you tried looking through Church records for any information on the family? Most Roman Catholic records are held locally. One website which may of use to you is the irishtimes website. Here, you can get an overview of what records are available for a specific parish. Here is a link to what records are available for Granard:
For Church of Ireland Records visit http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/
You could also check the land records that pertain to Ireland in the 19th century for some record of the Cusick family. There are two: The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) and the Griffith's Valuation (1848 - 1864). You can search through these at the following websites:
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Do you know much about John's emigration? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival than that of the port of departure. Perhaps you may be able to get more information on him if you can find he's ship passanger records. A good place to start is the US National Archives Immigration information which you can find here:
http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/
You can also do a search for him at the following:
Ellis Island: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp
and Castlegarden: http://www.castlegarden.org/
You may also be able to find some record of the family that remained in Ireland in the 1901 and 1911 census records. You can look through these here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Some other websites which may be helpful to you are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx and
Family Search: https://familysearch.org/
I hope this is of some help to you. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
