Marie (Mary) Mullen (Mullin) b 1868 , daughter of Edward Mullen/Mullin and Margaret Mallon/Mallin migrated from the Ballymote area to America in 1888/1890.  There she married James Gilligan, b 1868 in America, son of Bartley Gilgan and Nancy Bradley, who emigrated to America in 1868, I believe also from the Ballymote area.  Emigrating with them were their Irish born sons Edward and Patrick..

Seeking to establish contact with any related Mullens and Gilligans still residing in the area.

  • Hi thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

Have you tried looking up the Mullens and Gilligans in the 1901 and 1911 census records? You can search through them and hopefully find record of the families at the following link:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You could also try looking at Church Records for any birth/baptisms etc that may have taken place in the family. Most Catholic records are held locally. Perhaps you could try writing to the Parish priest for possible assistance? Here is a link to the contact information for the parish staff in Ballymote:

    http://homepage.tinet.ie/~jhiggins/parishstaff.html

I may also be an idea to place an advertisment in some local papers or bulletin boards in the area. I found a very good website dedicated to Ballymote where you could possibly do this:

    http://homepage.tinet.ie/~jhiggins/

Finally. you could also try contacting the Co. Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Centre, however they may charge a fee for their services. Here is their contact inforamtion:

    Aras Reddan,

    Temple Street,

    Sligo.

    Phone: (071) 9143728     Email: heritagesligo@eircom.net

I hope this information helps to make a connection with somoeone in the parish. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Gilljerr88, the Mary Mullin you mentioned in a post in 2012 was my grandmother´s sister. My grandmother was Bridget (known as "Beasy") Mullen, and she married my granfather, John McLoughlin, in 1901. Does this make us second cousins once removed?

    John
