hi,

I am looking for descendants of my Grandmothers McGuirk family from.......

Annagally (Killylough, Monaghan)

In 1911 my Grandmother Rosaline was aged 9y and living with her parents and siblings at the family farm at Annagally.

In 1901 my g-Grandfather Hugh is living at the house with siblings Owen, Peter, and Bridget.

I guess the siblings emigrated - I think probably to New York.

  • Hi thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

Perhaps you could try placing an advertisment in one of the parish newsletters or community boards in order to see if there are any descendants in the area or anyone that may remember the McGuirk family. You may be lucky  as you know that the family were in the area at least in the early 20th century.

I did a search of Annagally/Killylough and it is in the Tydavnet parish of Co. Monaghan.

I found a community website that may allow you to place an advertisment on their site. If you follow this link it will bring you to their contact page:

    http://tydavnet.com/contact-us/

Also, theonline newspare The Northern Standard, which circulates in Co. Monaghan may also accept an advertisement. You can find this here:

    http://northernstandard.ie/

Also, here is some contact information for a couple of churches in the parish of Tydavnet if you wish to place an ad in a church newsletter.

    Very Rev Brian Early, PP,
    Parochial House,
    Scotstown,
    Co. Monaghan. Tel 047-89204
    Email: bearly@eircom.net

Very Rev Canon Sean Clerkin, PE,
    St. Dympna?s,
    Tydavnet,
    Co. Monaghan. Tel/Fax 047-89402
    Email: sean.clerkin@eircom.net

    I hope that this helps.

    Kind regards,

  • hi,

Thank you for your input Emma, it is most appreciated.

I found a record of an Owen McGuirk, 21yo, from Monaghan arriving in New York on the ss Majestic in May 1901 - this would match the 1901 Census entry for Owen in Annagally on 31 Mar 1901.

He was going to his sister Katie living on Madison Ave, New York.

I found a birth record for a Catherine McGuirk b.1874 in Monaghan, which would match this Katie.

I have managed to make contact with the family in Annagally, and hope to arrange a visit some time this year.

I am not sure if they know much about the family that left Ireland for New York ??

  • Hi Sean,

That's great tha you have made contact with the family in Annagally! Hopefully they may have some information for you, whether it is about the family that left for New York or even just some family history or stories that you can't find in the records!

I hope you do get a chance to visit this year. We have recently added a tab at the top of our page for people that are planning on visiting in 2013. If you are coming over, would you mind taking a couple of minutes to complete it? It is just a few questions on where you are visiting from and where you plan to go etc. Thank you.

    Kind regards,

    Emma
