Hi,
I am searching for any information regarding one of my ancestors; William Chapman who was born in Longford, Ireland around 1846. His parents were John Chapman born around 1813 in Dunmow, Essex and Margaret (maiden name Stewart) who was born around 1823 who was originally from Scotland.
From what I have found out, the family were living in Sheffield; in Yorkshire around 1843 where their eldest daughter was born (another Margaret). From the years 1844 and 1858 I can't find any further information of the family so I can only assume that the family are living in Ireland at this time. By late 1858 I have found them relocated to John's hometown of Dunmow.
If anyone has any information it would much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Lauren A. Coverdale

Hello Lauren,
The name Chapman is rare in Longford, which is a good start. According to Griffith's Valuation, 1854 (a property record compiled for taxation purposes), there were 5 householders of the name, in the Killashee, Newtowncashel and Lanesborough areas. Was the family Church of Ireland or Catholic? There are church records of both denominations available, so it should be a process of elimination. Let me know which and I can advise you further.
Kind regards,
Martin Morris
