My great grandfather Edward Joseph Griffin emigrated from Galway around 1887 to Boston, MA. His father was John Griffin and his mother Mary White. He was born in Ballinrouan, Moylough, Galway in 1866. His siblings were Annie M., Nora Agnes, and thomas Francis. I am interested in learning more about the family and any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi
Do you know much about his emigration - dates - travell companions etc - ?

The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Hello,
I have some records for that Griffin family which might be of interest. John Griffin did reside in Ballinrooaun and his wife was Mary White from Mullaghmore South. The records that I have are as follows:
Edward - your great grandfather born July 7th, 1866
Honor - Probably Nora Agnes born October 2nd 1869
Thomas - Born December 13th 1873.Mary White had a sister Honor who married John Divilly also from Ballinrooaun and they had at least 7 recorded births Michael, Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Honor, Annie (Monaghan and Thomas all born between 1866 and 1880. Annie was the last to remain in Ballinrooaun but did not have any children. Interesting also John Divillys mother was Ann Griffin a sister to Edward Griffins father John. So that means that John Griffin and John Divilly were first cousins and married two sisters - I think thats correct!
John Griffin died between Jan-Mar 1891 and his land was then divided between John McGuire and Thomas Gilligan and his house and buildings on 1 acre of ground now became the property of Honor Divilly - his sister-in-law. This would probably indicate that none of Johns children were resident there and also that he was most likely a widower at this time. His death certificate would probably give this information as the informant is probably a very significant name.
Hope this was some help.
Regards,
Jimmy Laffey.

Thanks for the info. Since I first posted my message I have found that all 6 children of Mary White and John Griffin immigrated to the US. 1910 census indicated Mary had 6 children. Also interesting is that John died in 1891 as the last two to immigrate were Mary and her son Thomas inJune 1892.
Do you know if John owned the land or was just working it for a landlord? I am surprised they all left Ireland if they owned some land.
Thanks again for shedding more light on my family history.

to Moylough Galway
My aunt married Sean Glynn of Cahernacregg His mother was Nora Griffin and it looks like she was the last of that branch bearing the Griffin name
Her parents were John Griffin and Mary Bourke and his father was possibly John Griffin
Would appreciate knowing what connection you have found with the Ballinaruane Griffins
Thanks
