Would anyone know where exactly in Tynagh cemetary the graves of William McCormack   d.1959  and Celia Mc Cormack (nee Martin)  d. 1947 would be located.    I have visited on a few occasions and can't find them but someone with a bit of local knowledge might be able to shed some light.

Many thanks

Mary.

  • Hi mary, word is that graveyard is not recorded yet. However, our intrepid local says "leave it with me for a few days and I will follow up on it. If there is a headstone I will find it. Often burials are unmarked, then we are depending on the caretaker's register and map. I have to look at my records to see of there is a caretaker there."

  • Hi Dolores,

Just wondering if you heard anything back from the caretaker in the graveyard in Tynagh yet.

    Many thanks

  • Hello Mary,

I am afraid that I have tried in vain but can find no Tynagh memorial to either a McCormack or Martin.  I also spoke to the local undertaker who does not remember the family either. It was very common for families to be buried without a headstone. Do you know if there was one? However don't give up on it. I will check other local graveyards. We are in the process of recording nearby Lisheen graveyard and also the graveyard at Abbey is being recorded. As a point of information to assist in the search can you tell me where exactly the family originated from. There are McCormacks in nearby parishes that might be able to shed some light on the matter.

    Regards,

    Christy C.

  • Hi Christy,

Many thanks for the reply.   There most definately should be a headstone :)  but even I couldn't find it.   My dad would be a first cousin of Sean Cormican who still lives in Portumna (the name changed to  McCormack with us along the way).   Anyway William Cormican (McCormack) came from Crannagh and was buried in Tynagh around 15th June 1959.   His father was Michael Cormican and his mother was Mary Egan also from Crannagh.

Celia Martin was buried during the bad winter of February 1947.   Celias parents were Patrick Martin and Mary Jane Dervan both from Tynagh.   I know Christy that there is confusion with the change from Cormican to McCormack but it only changed when William came to Dublin...everyone else in Tynagh stayed as Cormicans.

I would be more than happy to go over to Tynagh again with my dad and have another look but dad feels that the stone has long worn away and Dad is not getting any younger so would like for him to see a new headstone go up on his parents grave.   Incidentally Christy there is a six month old child buried with William and Celia.

I also have William McCormacks death notice here which may help as it says that his remains will be arriving in Killeen on Friday 12th June 1959 for burial.

I hope some of this helps Christy and looking forward to hearing from you again.

    Kind Regards

    Mary.

  • Hi Mary,   I only searched for a Mc Cormack plot. The next time I pass I will check the Cormican name. I can ring the undertaker again and check that family plot out with him. Christy

  • Hi there, just wanted to check if anything was ever found.  Was at the graveyard during the week and still could find nothing.  The grave was last opened in 1959 for the burial of William McCormack. Many thanks. Mary.
