Kellys of Cloonpee
In 1901 census for the Cloonpee, Kinclare, Caltra, Ballinasloe, Co Galway,
John Booth is listed as Head of Family aged 82 years.
Son in law is Patrick Kelly aged 45 years
Daughter and wife to Patrick Kelly, Catherine Kelly is aged 42 years.
Children, John aged 12 years, Norah aged 10 years, Richard aged 7 years, and Peter aged 2 years. It also states that one member of the family is sick on the day the census was taken and from stories told, Peter died young (told by Willie Quigley to my father).
They shared a small village with their neighbours, Martin Dooley, Catherine Greeley and Peter Tyrell. This area surrounded Tyrell’s residence and Mill.
According to the 1901 census, John Booth lived in a 3rd grade house (which meant that it had 2 rooms and 2 windows and door with a thatched roof. They had one out building, possibly a small shed for animals.
Martin Dooley’s house consisted of one room and door. No windows and it was classed as a 4th grade house. There were 7 people living in this house at the time of the 1901 census. Catherine Greeley’s house consisted of one room, no windows and a door, she apparently lived alone.
Peter Tyrell’s house had 4 rooms and 10 people lived in this.
In addition to Patrick Kelly’s family, it is known that there were 2 other children born, Delia and Patrick Kelly. On estimation Patrick known as Pake was born on 1904, as he died aged 65 years in 1969.
Pake married Sarah Burke and they had 2 daughters, one child died young and the other one never married. Sarah Burke originated from Kinclare.
Delia immigrated to the America and married a man called Miller. Recently their granddaughter came home with her daughter to visit the home place of her ancestors.
Her name is Jill.
Richard known as Dick immigrated to New York in 1912, aged 18years. He travelled with John Booth, possibly his first cousin, he was aged 25 years. Dick went to stay with his sister? Norah Kelly in 18 West 64th Street New York.
John Booth went to stay with his Uncle Mr McHugh at 228 East 43rd street New York. His father is listed on the passenger list as Patrick Booth.
Dick was very tall, he is listed as fair complexion and height 6 foot and 3 inches.
From stories told Dick joined the Police force and never married and remained in New York.
