Hello, I am new to this site but I will do my best to provide my information as limited as it is.  My 3rd Great Grandfather George Carroll was born in 1829 in County Wicklow.  I found this information on his muster roll for the American Civil War.  He moved from Ireland to the United States and eventually emigrated to Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.  I am trying to find out his parish and any information on his family who lived there.  Thank you.

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reasonwhy they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given atthe port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g.Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps evenfind out an exact place of origin. Ellis Island:http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp Castlegarden:http://www.castlegarden.org/ US National Archives/Immigration info:http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/ The Boston Pilot; From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a?Missing Friends? column with advertisements from people looking for ?lost? friends and relativeswho had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 40,743 recordsis available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad thatappeared in the Pilot. http://infowanted.bc.edu/ The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

  • Hi Jim, I am Mari, Brian's wife. Sadly Brian passed away on 7 October 2019 but I have always been the one to keep the family history up to date. I know we always received Christmas and Easter cards from Ann Carroll in Wicklow and this would be one part of his family we didn't know very much about. Just looking at the family tree, Brian descended from Bridget Smith and it was her sister, Rosa Helena Smith, who married Thomas Carroll. • Hi Mari,

At the moment the information you have given me doesn’t mean much, so I’ll go back to your late husband Brian’s question. Before I try to help although my names Carroll this comes from  my Great Grandfather side of the family, George Carroll is on my Grand Mother’s side of the family.

George Carroll was married to Cathrine Tool had 3 Daughters and 2 Sons between 1818 and 1836.

Martha Carroll June 1818 at Kilquade County Wicklow my Great Great Grandmother.

James Carroll February 16th 1827 at Kilquade County Wicklow.

George Carroll June 17th 1829 at  Kilquade County Wicklow. Died April 24 1899 in Indiana USA.

Elizabeth November 6th 1831 at  Kilquade County Wicklow.

Cathrine April 16th 1836 at Kilquade County Wicklow.

    Marha Carroll married John Tracey

Their daughter Mary Tracy Married Peter Dolan.

Their Daughter Martha Dolan was my Grandmother.

    Hopes this helps Mari

  • Thanks Jim, for getting back to me. The names you mention don't mean much to me either, but I noticed that you have a TOOL name. My 3x great grandfather was John Thomas O'Toole (often used variations of the surname) who was born in Glendalough, County Wicklow, about 1816 and married Ellen Murphy, before migrating to South Australia around 1839/40. One of those names which has driven me crazy trying to work out who was who. Cheers, Mari

  • Mari,

This information was mostly collected by my Nephews daughter in USA and put me on to her ancestry program. I come from Scotland

And all my ancestors originated in Ireland,  it's not easy to find the information you are looking for.

    regards Jim

  • Hello new relly Gary, good to hear from someone who is related.

I come from John who seems to have become John Thomas, who married Ellen Murphy (I think).

I think I have found a possible marriage for them.

I have heaps of information and have written my John and Ellen's story, and have written some of Dennis' story as well.

Been fortunate to have a number of Dennis' descendants here in South Australia who have given me lots of information.

Yours is not a name I have come across before, but there are so many names! I look forward to hearing more from you.

I'd be happy for you to respond via my email address - marbri2@chariot.net.au

By the way, I'm in South Australia, Cheers, Mari

  • Hi Jim, thanks for getting back to me. You are right, information from Ireland is difficult, but that is what these sites are for.

As you will see from the thread above, Gary has just made contact and seems we are related.

    Thanks, Mari

  • Hello Mari,

Before I read the chain of replies I searched on Roots Ireland and found a baptism of George Carroll  24 May 1807 in Bray, Co. Wicklow (the only George Carroll). His parents were listed as James Carroll and Judith ..... and sponsors were Pat Madden and Catherine Keeffe. There is a link to the Roman Catholic Parish Registers and 2 matching registers found.

If you think this is a possibility I could look them up for you.

    Cheers,

    Betty Garrad from Queensland.

  • Thank you Betty, from further searching into Brian's tree, it seems that George Carroll doesn't belong to his family.

    Many thanks for your offer,

    Mari, South Australia

Hi I hope you don't mind me joining in.
My second great grandfather Arthur Jacob (1790-1874) married Sarah Coote Carroll (1795-1859) he was an eye surgeon in Trinity College Dublin. I cannot find anything about Sarah or her family. However I find the attached file an image of a George Carroll grave stone in Co, Wicklow. Regards Nick
