I am researching two families from this area.  Bridget Evoy (1795-1884), the wife of Jasper Stafford, emigrated with some or most of her children in 1854 to the United States (Chicago, Illinois).  She may have been a widow at that time.  Her children were William (b. 1824), Catherine (b. 1830), Bridget (b. 1831 but no death information available), Martin (b. 1832), Martha (b. 1837) and Johanna (b. 1839).  All of them are buried in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Ilinois.  Johanna married John Johnson (b. 1827, apparently also from Wexford).  They were my maternal great-grandparents.  Jasper seems to be a name that is passed down through the generations in this family, since it was given to some of their descendants in Chicago as a first or second name.  I have no information on John's family in Ireland and would appreciate receiving any information on them.  The information I have is mostly available on a public tree on the Ancestry.com website if anyone is interested in this family.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Have you had a look for the family on Rootsireland.ie? It is a subscription site but you can join for short periods. Familysearch.org may also provide the same results but the former mentioned site is a little easier to use. Records for Taghmon begin in 1801 for the RC parish but there are some gaps in the series:

  • I also have some Staffords from Wexford in my family tree; Bridgida Stafford married Gulielmi(William) Maddocks 18/FEB/1806 in Ferns, Taghmon Parish, County Wexford. They had at least 2 daughters, Mariam b. 25/OCT/1814 & Catherine b. 18/MAR 1817. Catherine would be my g-grandmother. Maybe migrated in 1851, lived briefly in Oswego, NY with husband Denis Danahy. They moved to Van Buren County, MI where she died in 1898. Bridget and William Maddocks also had a son named Nicholas. Info comes from Parish Records in Ireland.

  • Thank you for the information.  It is possible that both Bridgets are related, but there were many Staffords in the area at that time, including a number of Bridget Staffords.
