Hi, I am hoping to locate a Benjamin Poole c. 1806 who lists his birth place as Gorey, Wexford and is married to Catherine Cavangh. They emigrated to Australia in 1840.He lists his parents as William and Catherine poole also of Gorey. I have been through the COI parish records and the Hollyfort records thanks to Rev Mark Hayden at Gorey Christ Church.Lots of Poole families but none match up. I live in Australia and am looking for a new direction to try and locate this man.He also came out to Australia with his brother William c.1807 and his wife Anne Stacy. It has been suggested that perhaps there were 3 other bothers, Jacob c. 1803, John c. 1802 and george c. 1811. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Hi Anne

a couple of long shots, I served in the Merchant Navy in the late 1960s and 1970s and there was a well known Captain Johhny Poole from Wexford and a message on this site may elicit a response, he would be deceased now.

See http://www.irishships.com/news.html You have to email the message first following abuse of the site previously.

Also there is a Facebook page for Rosslare Maritime Enthusiasnts which you can Google and request to join, they do not do Genealogy but recently brought out a book on the Irish Merchant Navy and may have family contacts.

    Good Luck

  • When Benjamin Poole was born about 1807, in Wexford, Ireland, his father, William, was 27 and his mother, Catherine, was 28. He married Catherine CAVANAGH about 1839, and embarked to Australia in 1840 on the ship 'Earl Grey'. Benjamin was Protestant and could read and write. His career is listed as a Farm Labourer on transportation papers. They had six children in 11 years including a daughter. Benjamin died on October 3, 1873, in New South Wales, at the age of 66.
