    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Civil registation of births started in 1864 so I searched and found the birth record for Johanna. You will have to sign-in to see the page and Johanna's is the second record. You will note that as of 1864 the family was living on Mainst. in Wexford Town. William's occupation was coachman. Did the family emigrate?

  • Thank you, Roger!

John Hughes immigrated first to Scotland. He married Cecelia Grant of Glasgow at St Patrick's RC Church, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire on 27 Feb 1881. John and Cecelia had two daughters born in Scotland before the whole family immigrated to Providence, Rhode Island USA.

Three more children were born in Providence, one of whom was my grandfather, John Joseph Hughes, b 30 Jun 1890.

My great-grandfather died in Providence in 1921.

I don't know what became of the rest of the family in Wexford, though I'd love to know. It's only recently that I learned where my great-grandfather originated, and it was exciting to find his family. Thanks for the information you turned up.
