It was thought that my husband's great grandparents were Bartholomew and Mary (Doocey) Hurley of Tallow, Waterford, Ireland.  However, no records match those names but there are records which do match the names Bartholomew and Mary (Hurley) Doocey.  If those records are correct, two of the sons, Maurice (my husband's grandfather) and John, changed their surnames from Doocey to Hurley.  It is possible that they were involved in the Irish Republican Brotherhood and changed their names to protect themselves.  These two brothers also moved from Tallow, Waterford, Ireland to Lanarkshire, Scotland.  Here's what is known about the Hurley/Dooceys:

1.)  There is a baptismal record from Tallow for Maurice Doocey whose parents were Bartholomew Doocey and Mary Hurley.  His birth date was 3 Jul 1881 which is the date we know to be my husband's grandfather's birthdate.

2.)  Bartholomew Doocey was born 25 Jun 1841 to Thomas Doocey and Mary Hickey in Tallow, Ireland.  He died on 4 Apr 1891 in Kilcalf, Ireland.  Mary Hurley was born 10 Feb 1854 in Tallow to Michael Hurley and Mary Cronan.  She died on 12 Feb 1900 in Kilcalf.  Bartholomew and Mary were married 9 May 1869 in Tallow.

3.)  The children of Bartholomew and Mary (Hurley) Doocey are Thomas, Margaret, Johanna, James, Michael, Mary, John, Johanna, Maurice, Elizabeth, Bartholomew,  Patrick, and Thomas.  There were two Johannas and two Thomases as one of each died young.  Patrick also died young.

4.)  The children of Bartholomew and Mary (Hurley) Doocey in later censuses:

a.)  Michael is listed as the head of the household in Kilcalf in the 1901 census.  His sister Elizabeth and brothers, Bartholomew and Thomas are living with him.  As is a nephew Thomas.  Michael is not married.  Maurice is living down the road working on a farm.

b.)  In the 1911 census, Michael is living along in Kilcalf and is not married.

All of this information pretty much matches what is known to be true about my husband's family tree.  Does anyone have any information about these families?  And if the assumption that Maurice and John Doocey changed their surnames to Hurley, why did they do so?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

  • Dear Mars:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board!

You might find more information about the families through newspaper research.  Unfortunately, most of the Irish newspapers are only available through subscription websites such as Irish Newspaper Archives or British Newspaper Archives.  The newspapers might give further clues as to reasons why Maurice and John changed their names if they were involved in republican activities.

The best of luck to you with your researh and a Happy St. Patrick's Day to you!

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
