Seeking information about my great great grandfather Thomas Quinn of Ballyvoyle, Stradbally. He may have been born as early as 1814. The 1901 census shows a Thomas Guinn, but I suspect this was an error in the record. I am interested in learning where and when he died. Also, I am not aware of other Quinn families from the immediate area, and I have been told that Quinn is a northern Irish name.

Mark:
In the mid-19th century, Quinn was a common surname in Northern Ireland (particularly Tyrone, Armagh and Down) but was also found in good numbers in every county in the current Republic of Ireland.
I did not see a Thomas Quinn death record in Kilmacthomas registration district from 1901-1930. Thomas must have died between 1901-1911 since he is not listed in the 1911 census at least in Ballyvoyle.
How about the name of his wife and children who might have been in Ireland in 1901?

Thank you Roger! My great great grandmother Catherine Lyons Quinn died in Ballyvoyle in 1881. Her death was reported by Thomas, so he was still alive then. Their younger children emigrated to Massachusetts. I have come across other names of children born in the 1840s who may have been theirs, but they disappear from the record. I suspect they may not have survived the famine. Mark Quinn

Hello Mark,
Many thanks for your message.
I see from the 1901 census that there was a Dwyer family living with Thomas Guinn/Quinn. The Dwyers appear in the 1911 census also, seemingly in the same house (four rooms, two windows at front). At least one of the Dwyers was in Ballyvoyle in living memory. In fact I think there's an old photo of one of them in front of the house. If you'd like to drop me an email - cianflaherty96@gmail.com - I could put you in touch with who I think has it!
