Hi everyone,

I'm looking for any information that you might have on a Honora Buckley, born in 1826 in Waterford (not sure where). She later emigrated to Newfoundland, Canada, sometime before 1855.

If you have any information, I would really appreciate it! Thank you.

  • Hello there Candice and Greetings from Waterford in the sunny south east of Ireland.

I had a quick look for your ancestor Honora Buckley among the Co. Waterford Catholic parish records which can be found online at www.rootsireland.ie.  I couldn't find Honora Buckley b. c.1826.  The nearest I got was Honor Buckley baptized 1st May 1824.  Her parents are listed as John Buckley and Mary English.  Godparents are James Halley and Joanna Dower.

The parish given is Cahir.  I cannot quite figure this out as the parish and town of Cahir is actually in the neighbouring county of Tipperary and doesn't actually stretch to meet the county boundary.  There is a townland name of Caher in the civil parish of Islandikane in Co. Waterford but I doubt if that's the one referred to.

I suggest you drop an email to Fr. Michael O'Connor at Waterford Heritage Centre  email:  mnoc@iol.ie  Send him the above details.  He compiled the database and may be able to shed some light on the parish name for you.

I hope the above is of help to you.

    Warm wishes

  • Hi Tony,

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it! Seems like I can trace my Walsh lineage right back to Waterford as well, potentially in Lismore or Dungarvan via a Patrick Walsh born in 1778. He later immigrated to Newfoundland died in Lamaline, but I suppose looking for a Patrick Walsh is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

I will certainly reach out to the Waterford Heritage Centre. I expect to be in Waterford in two weeks doing some journalistic work. I look forward to the experience!

    Thanks kindly, Tony.

    Candice
