Matthew Jordan b. 1818

The town of Portlaw is in east Co. Waterford to the north west of Waterford city and not far from Carrick-on-Suir, Lismore is the the west of the county, near Co. Cork.

The Catholic parish for Portlaw area was sometimes referred to as 'Portlaw & Ballyduff' after the locations of the two chapels in the parish. Baptism records for this parish go back to about 1809, you can view the parish registers on the National Library Website

I had a quick look through the baptisms for any Jordans in the parish during the 1810s/1820s and spotted just two baptisms - David in 1820, and Peter in 1823, to parents David Jordan and Catherine Power. It's probably worth a closer look through the earlier records to see if this couple had other children... possibly including your Matthew

Images of the historic Catholic Records for the parish are online free on the National Library website - see Parish of Portlaw/Portlaw & Ballyduff, and there also indexed versions, i.e. searchable by name etc, on pay-websites Ancestry & FindMyPast (RootsIreland may also have transcripts for the parish, but do not have images). Transcripts of old register are never perfect so it's a good idea to browse the images as sometimes it's possible to make out adittional details, or a different opinion of a record detail. Bear in ind the registers are not always filled in in strict date sequence and Latin is often used for first-names and months, place names if they are included can be abbreviated.
