I am trying to learn more about my Great-great-grandparents, Thomas Casey (1779-1882) and Ellen Phelan (1797-1883). We believe Ellen was born in Dungarvan and her parents were Thomas Phelan and Julia Conners.  Thomas Casey and Ellen Phelan were married 3 February 1833 in Lismore (presumably the civil parish). They had at least three sons — William (1835-1883), my great grandfather who emigrated to America; Maurice (1836-1908) who lived near Ballyduff Upper; John (1843-????) about whom we know little except for a baptism record. Both Thomas and Ellen (Phelan) Casey died at the “family cottage” now overseen by son Maurice and his wife, Mary (Daly) Casey. Family lore suggests that the Casey’s were more drawn toward Aglish, Tallow and regions east of Ballyduff.  I am very interested to learn where Thomas and Ellen were buried.  I presume it is a family plot where son Maurice and and his wife Mary were buried in 1908 and 1905 respectively.  Thank you for and insights, information or suggestions you can offer.

    Hi Richard,

Your query was passed to me by a colleague. I believe that I have come across one of your ancestors in my researches. Maurice Casey featured in a newspaper report in 1890. I think that I can attach a copy of his letter. At this time he was living in the village of Ballyduff but according to the census he appears to have moved across the river to Ballyduff Lower townland.

I also checked the census of 1911 and found a Maurice Casey living in Ballyduff Lower whom I think is the same person. (He is aged 60 so born 1841; He cannot read/write same as the newspaper article; He has a sister-in-law Kate Daly)

Grave plots are somewhat harder to identify. At this time (circa. 1900) there were only two official graveyards; Lismore and Mocollop. As parishioners the Caseys would have been entitled to burial in one or other but might not have been entitled to a family plot. Mocollop was the nearest graveyard to Ballyduff. I believe that I have a grave index to Mocollop graveyard but I can't lay my hand on it just yet.

Maurice's letter may take a lot of explanation but I will do my best if you think that he is the correct person.

    Hi Richard,

I found the survey, but there are no Casey burials that match the information in your eMail.

    Best Wishes

  • Thank you, Richard.  I’m very interested in the Maurice’s letter. Yes, he is the right Maurice Casey (I’ve made contact with his descendants through DNA) I’m eager to hear more, especially if the census states that he could not read nor write. If it would easier, please feel free to send it to my email address: Burbach816@gmail.com

  • Hi Richard, I have nothing specific but just to let you know that I've come across the surname Phelan a few times when searching Catholic Baptismal and Marriage registers from Co Tipperary.
