Power of Ballylaneen

The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing has a Richard Powere living in Carrigcastle townland. Likely this is the father of Canon Martin and Edmond.

Roots Ireland which is a subscription site has records for Stradbally RC church (which corresponds to Ballylaneen civil parish) back ro around 1800. It might be worth a one month subscription to look for your Powere records ( Roots has transcriptions of the parish records).

The other alternative is to wait until later this summer when the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching. You could look at the Stradbally register at that time.

I have just recently read your 2015 post.  

I am a decendant of William and Bridget Power, both buried at St.Anne's, Ballylaneen.

They probably have some connection with your Mary Anne Power.

James Brett (d 1951) and his wife Brigid Power (d. 1901) were my great-grandparents. Brigid died young within year of the birth of her fourth child. Her daughter Margaret Brett (d. 1980) was my grandmother. The other people commemorated on that stone are all Brigid Power's family including the Brigid Power, her grandmonther, mentioned at the top of the stone. The younger Brigid was a niece of Edmond's through Edmond's brother Michael Power (the epitaph does not explain that Michael and Brigid were father and daughter, nor that Michael was Edmond's brother). Canon Martin Power (buried in Dunhill) was the other brother - and you're apparently descended from the only sister. I did not have the info about where the sister went, although I knew that there was one. So she had three brothers in all.

It was Edmond who put up the stone in memory of his parents Richard and Brigid Power (mentioned at the top of the epitaph) and other relatives. His brother Michael Power mentioned on the stone was my great-great-grandfather. The Richard and Brigid mentioned at the top of the stone were my great-great-great grandparents. I don’t have their dates.

My mother still has a copy of Edmond Power’s will. The Powers owned a farm of 65 acres in Ballylaneen. My grandmother and her siblings, possibly Edmond’s closest relatives, were only in their early 20s when Edmond Power died and although they were Edmond Powers grand-niece and grand-nephews (3), their mother Brigid Power had married into the local pub (James Brett’s), which would have been seen as a step down in society. Edmond Power (unmarried) bequeathed the farm to the church on his death in the early 1920s. His will left instructions as to how it was to be converted into a parochial house after he died. The land was also left to the church - but my grandmother was given first option on buying it when the bishop later put it up for sale - and we still own it. While there are descendants (you, me and each of our extended families), there were none that carried on the name Power.
