My 3x great-grandmother is listed as Lydia Ann Lockard (but the spelling of the last name varies). She was likely born in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone in 1834. She emigrated with her parents (John and Ellen or Helen Lockard) around 1845. In Canada (Innisfil, Simcoe, Ontario) on 08 Dec 1859 she married Joseph Lockhard (or Lockard/Lockhart) who was also supposedly from Dungannon, Co. Tyrone. Joseph was born around 1837 and his parents were William Lockhard and Mae Dillon.  Joseph emigrated to Canada around 1856. I've not been able to trace either family further back (were they related even before they were married?) and would love to know more about them. I'd like to locate their parish church (likely Church of Ireland) and find out where they lived prior to emigrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

  • Just a quick update, looking at their Canadian records, they may have been presbyterian (not Church of Ireland) but it's difficult to say for sure...

  • The Church of Ireland in Dungannon has baptisms from 1665 onwards (with gaps). Baptisms are complete for 1809- 1845.

    Methodist baptisms for Dungannon circuit 1819-1846 (Methodist marriages at that time would have been in the Church of Ireland).

    1st Dungannon Presbyterian records start 1790. There is a note against them saying that for the years 1819-1828 you should also check 3rd Cookstown Presbyterian records, as there are Dungannon marriages in it. (I have seen those records and someone decided to record marriages from different churches in the same single register. Not sure why, possibly a Minister who moved churches a couple of times and took the register with him).

    2nd Dungannon Presbyterian baptisms start 1830, marriages 1825.

    Copies of all the above records are held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. They are not on-line so far as I am aware so a personal visit is required to view them.
