My great-great grandmother Mary McPeak was born about 1828 in Ireland and sailed to New Brunswick, Canada, in 1835.  She had married my great-great  grandfather John McGarrigle in 1844, several years before the first census in New Brunswick, but the other McPeaks in the Pennfield area, including a Charles, Hugh and Catherine  were probably from Dromore.  The spelling of their last name was changed to McPike.

  • Susan,

Mary’s birth was before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864). Prior to that you need to rely on church baptism records. You haven’t said what Mary’s denomination was. However it may not matter in this case since none of the main denominations (RC, Church of Ireland or Presbyterian) in Dromore has any records earlier than 1835, so whatever her denomination there probably won't be a record of it.

Looking at the 1901 census of Co Tyrone, there were 11 people named McPeake and 28 McPike. All were RC. None of the McPeakes lived in the parish of Dromore but some of the McPikes did.

6 McPike households in Dromore in the 1834 tithe applotment records. The tithes are not a census and only list those with land, however they are useful in narrowing where your ancestors may have come from:

In the absence of paper records, DNA testing might be a way of linking to families in the area today.

  • I neglected to say that Mary was a RC and I am aware of the lack of church records. Thank you for your quick response and suggestions.

  • hi Susan

I have a James Molloy b.abt 1817 married to Margaret Mcpake? b.abt 1781- died 1876 according to Griffths living in Aghadulla Dromore Tyrone.he was a Flower  Merchant Foreman. one of James and Margaret's sons went to Australia (1876) and my wife is a direct decendant of them, your DNA would be intresting if matched.  on www.familytreedna.com

I also have another James Molloy (which DNA has matched) b.abt 1812 Tyrone, married to a Rose McPeake b.abt1803 Tyrone  coming to Australia with a family. (after 1852)

Mcpeake-Mcpike-Mcpake and with the lack of BMD  I think DNA is the only way!

  • Hello Susan,

I have a 3rd gr-grandmother whose maiden name was Catherine McPike born c. 1818, who immigrated to Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada in the mid-1830s from Ireland with some other family members. In 1841, she married John McCauley who was originally from County Donegal. Their oldest child was Mary McCauley who was my 2nd gr-grandmother.

What I have discovered is that Catherine's parents are listed on her death record (1888) as James McPike and Mary McDermott. I understand death records are not a first line source, but since her husband was still alive and likely the informant, I feel better about the information.

The best part is that I have had a DNA test and found just recently that a couple of matches are McGarrigles. I don't know how Mary McPike and Catherine are related, but I'm hoping it will be possible to find out. My guess is that Catherine McPike might have been from the McPikes in Donegal.
