My name is Chris Hughes. I am trying to trace a HUGH McLelland who was my g.g. grandfather. I have traced his son William who married Margaret Connolly in 1875 at St. Mary's Clonmel. I think William was born c. 1850 and Margaret a little later. They emigrated to Manchester, England and remained there bringing up their family. Their first child Hugh was born in Ireland at Portlaw - William and Margaret living on Browne Street in Portlaw where William worked as a iron moulder. Hugh the father was listed as a carpenter on the marriage certificate. I have not had any success in tracing any birth record of William or Hugh though in the English census of 1901 William lists Co. Waterford as birthplace.
Interested in any help on finding out any further information as I am coming to Ireland in October. An aunt of mine did some research in the 1980s and suggested that Hugh may have come from Antrim, Carnmoney parish. I have also found a Hugh McClelland in Letterkenny listed as a carpenter. There is also evidence of McLellands in the Waterford district in various trade directories.
Hope someone might be able to shed a little light.
Kind regards,
Chris Hughes

Hello Clare,
Thanks for getting back. No replies as such. I am now wondering whether I should have posted the message for Portlaw, Waterford and Clonmel, Tipperary. What do you think?
Best wishes,
Chris Hughes
