  • Hi Judy

www.rootsireland.ie/ has the death record of James Hamilton in Tyrone in 1869

He was aged 79 so born either 1790 or 1789

There is only 1 James Hamiltopn birth record for these years which was 1789 in Donegal

It costs to view the full record on rootsireland but it MAY have more information such as a parent's name.

Interestingly in the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (free) there are 25 Hamiltons in Tyrone but the county is called Tyrone Donegal so the above birth could well be your man after all.

  • Judy,

I?d be inclined to get the 1869 death certificate to find James? townland. That way you may be able to locate the family home in Griffiths Valuation, and see who it passed to after his death. You will also need the townland name if searching church records for baptism and marriages. (You are unlikely to get his baptism as few churches in that specific area (parish of Ardstraw) have records that go back that far but you may find later events ie marriage and baptism of his children).

If he was a farmer or at least had some land, you may also be able to trace him in the tithe applotment records (1820s & 1830s). Those for the Newtownstewart area are not on-line, and are held on microfilm in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.

I can see 14 James Hamiltons listed in Griffiths for Ardstraw in 1859. If you let me know what the townland is on the death certificate, I?ll see if I can find where yours lived. And I'll check the revaluation records to see who acquired it after his death.

  • Hi Judy & Elwyn

The parish of the death certificate was Newtownstewart

  • Col,

Thanks for that. Newtownstewart isn?t a parish though. It?s just a town in the parish of Ardstraw. Unfortunately the name James Hamilton is very common in that parish and that?s why I need the specific townland (address) from the death cert to narrow the search further.

  • No luck I'm afraid Elwyn!

Age 79             Parish   Newtownstewart   County Tyrone

    Address Newtownstewart

    Occupation Surgeon R N

  • I didn't realize that they were not online. How would I find out if there are records at PRONI for Newtownstewart?

My great grandmother was Elizabeth Jane O'Connor from Newtownstewart.

  • OK. Newtownstewart turns out to be a townland in its own right as well as a town.  I went through the revaluation records for both. A James Hamilton is listed as having 13 acres of land (plot 15) in Newtownstewart. It changed to the Rev Charles Hamilton in 1871. That could coincide with James?s death as the Griffiths clerks were often a year or tow out in their dates.

I also saw that plot 51 in Mill St (a house and garden) was rented by Mrs Hamilton, landlord Andrew Hamilton. That might be the Andy who was the informant for the death. I didn?t see any other references to James or Andrew Hamilton.

This seems to be the abstract (summary) for James Hamilton, who evidently died intestate (source is PRONI wills website):

    Full Abstract :

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of James Hamilton late of Newtownstewart County Tyrone M.D. a Widower deceased who died 30 September 1869 at same place were granted at Londonderry to Joseph Farbridge Holliday of  57 King-street, Manchester, County Lancaster, Merchant the Attorney of James Babington Hamilton Son of said deceased.             Effects under ?200.

So that seems to indicate that James had a son James Babington Hamilton, who probably lived in England by 1869.

The probate record confirms James was a doctor. The information that Col has provided indicates he was surgeon in the Royal Navy. In that case there are probably some service records to be found in the National Archives in Kew (London), or possibly on Ancestry or findmypast.

  • In the book Newtownstewart Remembered by Billy Dunbar, a Hamilton, James, surgeon, R.N. is referenced in the section Slater, 1846, Newtownstewart. There is another reference to a James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Abercorn, who was born on 21 Jan 1811 and who married Lady Louisa Jane Russell on 25 Oct 1832.

There is a subsequent book by the same author but I don't have it.

  • Hello Elwy & Col,

Thank you both for taking the time to follow up on James Hamilton, my GG grandfather. He did indeed have a son James Babington Hamilton, my G grandfather, who came to Australia. It is great to think that I may be able to get James' death certificate.

Thank you again. I have been to Ireland once in 2006, but hope to return next year or the year after and spend some more time there.

    All the best,

    Judy

  • I suspect this might be your James Hamilton, or a descendant of him anyway.

  • Our McElrea family is connected to the Hamiltons by marriage and I found the book mentioned in the following statement (The Maymore Hamiltons and Related Families) of use. It is available online in pdf format. There are several surgeons mentioned - it must have been a family occupation! Our McElrea/Hamilton family lived in Lisnatunny Glebe. If you find a connection, please let me know!

  • Are you able to post the link to this book.  I couldn't find it on the internet.

  • I couldn't find it either, but was too lazy to conduct a thorough search. ;-) I have a pdf copy on my computer. If you want to send me your email address privately, I will send you a link so you can download it. It is 1.6mb, so too large to attach here.

Here is another one I found

  • I don't know if this would be of any interest to you but this is a link to a book of landowners owning at least one acre in 1876. There is an entry for a John Hamilton in Newtownstewart.

  • Hello,

I looked up James Hamilton in the "Directory of Ulster Doctors" and it has:

"James Hamilton (1789/90-1869) ... married 1 August 1839 at Inver Church of Ireland Church, County Donegal, Patricia Babington, youngest daughter of Murray Babington of Bonny Glen; died 30 September 1869 at Newtownstewart..."

A book well worth getting if you have a lot of doctors in your family.

  • Thank you Gantry and also others who have followed up my James Hamilton link. I am hoping to visit Newtonstewart later this year and see where he lived. I'm hoping to do more research before I travel there. Thank you again! Judy

  • Hello Jude

its an old post, but just read it.

I also have a GG Grandfather James Hamilton from Newtownstewart. Born 1839 and moved to Australia.

His parents were John and Rebecca. All I know is that John died in 1881 in Australia.

they might be related to yours. I will now read all the Thread!
