Hello at Ireland reaching out. What a wonderfull site to find. Thank you for hosting it. and helping us find our familys.

My question is: My ancestor John Caldwell was married to Mary Kyle

on the 12th february 1874

at the Drunclamph Parish Church of Drumclamph in county Tyrone

registrar's district of Castlederg

They lived in Kilrail

John Caldwell was a Widower

Mary Kyle was a spinster

I have their marriage certificate from

Emerald ancestry.com.

I cant seem to find  where they lived. who John was married to before Mary.

I know they had 3 children once they were married.

Any help would be great

Many thanks

John and Mary lived in Kilreal Lower townland. There were three children from his first marriage living with them. The 1901 census record is below. I could not find John and Mary in the 1911 census but I did find Henry who had married and was living in Kilreal Lower townland with his wife and child.

Regarding John's first wife, I found two birth index records for a Henry Caldwell in Castlederg registration district. One for 1866 and the other for 1870. Not sure which is the correct for your Henry. To get a copy of the birth records, you need to write to the GRO www.groireland.ie Fill out their form. provide the year, registration district (castlederg) and the volume and page number. The record should provide John's first wife's name.

  • Hi Roger,

    Wow thanks for your find.

Im not 100% sure that what you found is my John and Mary Caldwell. As it would have made them 72 yrs and 57yrs  in 1909.

My John Caldwell  died in 16. January. 1909 at 84 years of age. Mary Kyle (kyle her maiden name) was 49 years at the time of his death. I know that means she was 14 years old at the time of her marriage to John in 1874. Bit creepy, or was that normal. Maybe she was the maid in their house when JOhns first wife died? and so he married Mary Kyle?

John and Mary Kyle Caldwell married in 1874 and had 3 children that I know of, 1 im unsure of.

John Kyle Caldwell B:18.12.1874...... This is my great grandfather. He came to New Zealand.

Annie Issabella B: 26.8.1876..... not sure who she married

Mary Rebecca  B: 26.12.1878......Marrried Robert James Leitch.  5.6.1902

Robert Walter B: 2.5.1882  (This kid Im not sure is there's) married Margaret Slater (Lancashire)10.5.1909

I have John Caldwells will and it states 6 children.

    William Caldwell,

    Henry Caldwell,

    James Caldwell,

    John Caldwell,

    Robert Caldwell,

    Annie Caldwell.

No mention of Mary Rebecca. But she was married then to a Robert James Leitch. B:9.9.1868

Nixon, Robert and John  McCay are all mentioned on his will. They are on census national archives.

Thomas (Thos) Leary was also on John Caldwells will and his son John Kyle Caldwells 18.12.1874  birth cert. Thos and wife Ellen are on census national archives. He must have been the districts doctor.

So I dont have place of death for John Caldwell or his wife Mary Kyle caldwell.

I cant seem to pin down where exactly they lived.  Or Johns first wife, which he must have had.

Im not sure about the 2 Henry Caldwell listings you found either. I dont have birth dates or mothers name so its a bit hard to pin down an exact find for him.

Same with his 2 brothers Jame and William.

Thank you so much for your find tho of John and Mary caldwell.

    Kind regards

    Sparrow
