Thanks so much Eamonn!   I am most interested in finding possible family back in Ireland. We have quite a family story, and I'd love to see any developments of the family in Ireland as well. Living in Nenagh, i know there are still Sheridan and Murray families in the area. But i researched your family history on the details you gave anyway.

In ' Irelands Births and Baptisms 1620-1881',

John Murry born on the 7th August, 1877 in Ballycarido, Co. Tipperary to John Murry and Mary Sheridan Murry.

Mary Murray born on the13th December, 1872 daughter of John Murray and Mary Sheridan.(this must be the daughter that became a nun).

Pat Murray born on the 20th March, 1879 in Ballycarido, Tipperary, father John Murray and mother Mary Sheridan Murray.

Tim Murray born on the 23rd February, 1881, birthplace Ballycarido,Tipperary to John Murray and Mary Murray Sheridan.

James Murry, Christening Place:Portroe, Tipperary, Birth Date:16th Sept. 1874, Birthplace:Portroe,Tipperary, Father's Name: John Murry Mother's Name: Mary Sheridan.

In the 'Ireland Calendar of Wills and Administrations 1858-1920':

Murray John: 13 April Administration of Estate of John Murray, late of Ballycarido, Portroe, Co. Tipperary, farmer who died 14th March, 1898, granted at Limerick to Mary Murray of Ballycarido, the Widow. Effects £49.

In the 'Ireland Valuation Office Books 1831-1856':

Land Assessment for John Murray in 1846, Youghalarra, Co. Tipperary.

In the 'Ireland Tithe Applotment Books 1814-1855':

John Murry, Tax Assessment, 1824, Youghalarra, Gurtnaveigh, Co. Tipperary.

In the 1901 Census I found a Margaret Murray living in Pallasmore, Youghalarra, age 60 (R.C.) Head of the Family. In the House at the time was a cousin Henry Murray , age 52 (R.C)

In the 1901 Census, Elizabeth Sheridan in the townland of Barbaha, Youghalarra, age 7, (R.C) living with her father William age 45 another daughter Mary age 5 and a son Patrick age 2 living in House 5  in Barbaha, I presume the motherwas deceased at this time. The mother does not appear in the 1911 Census eithier but the rest of the family does with occupations if you wish to look.

In the 'Ireland Births and Baptisms 1620-1881', you will find a number of  'Sheridans' in the Portroe area in the 1800's , i would say all the one family including a Catherine, Thomas, Marten, etc, check it out.

Dear John,  You and Eamonn are princes for helping me out so much.  I am sure that is my family.  I mistakenly stated John and Mary Murray were my grandparents - they were my great grandparents.  Their son 'Pat' was my wonderful grandfather, Patrick Joseph Murray, who was a police captain in San Francisco.  He had received an amazing education somewhere in Ireland as he spoke five languages and played a few instruments.  We were all in awe at his beautiful penmanship.  His brother John settled in Massachusetts, and I recently connected with his descendents.  My father was also a John Murray.  Mary was a very common name in our family. So are some of the other names you cite:  James, Tim, Elizabeth, and Catherine. We also have Martin and Brian.   I will follow your instructions and contact Nora.  I am most interested in locating any current Sheridans or Murrays.  My father and grandfather were so very proud of their heritage, told us wonderful stories, and were most grateful to have come from the Nenagh, Tipperary area.  I also am hoping to come to Ireland for the first time in 2018.  Many, many thanks,  Cathy Murray

Cathy,  I don't know how I overlooked this thread until now.  My Murrays appear to be from Youghalarra and Burgess parishes to the west of Nenah.  I believe that many of the people identified by your fellow researchers are my direct ancestors or close cousins.  In March, 2016, I visited the parishes and again in January, 2017 I went to Dublin to search at the NLI, National Archives and the assessment office.

My great grandfather, Timothy Murray (b around 1825), left with his siblings (possibly half siblings) Elizabeth, John and Philip for Kilbourne, Columbia County, Wisconsin.  His first cousin, also Timothy (b 1837) went to Australia.  I think my Tim's parents were Timothy Murray and Maggie (maybe Elizabeth) Hart/Heart/Heath).  The mother may have followed them as there is an Elizabeth Murray about the right age buried next to my Tim and his wife.

From my research, the Murrays arrived in Youghalarra in the early to mid 1700s, possibly from County Carlow (Bagnelstown?).

Per family lore, the Murrays are actually Scottish.  My Y DNA test confirms we are Scots, possibly Picts.  We are Catholic, although indifferent ones.  We have used the Murray surname for almost 300 years, but don't have a Murray Y.  The Y is closer to McMillan, McGregor, etc. than Murray and the peculiar mutation might originate on the Isle of Arran or the Isle of Bute in far western Scotland.

The Murray line is my most mysterious one.  As such, I'd like to swap information.  I have taken the full range of DNA tests as have some cousins.  We have been working on this for decades.
