Kilvalure Burial Ground

Thanks Tom!  I've been told by someone else here on Ireland XO in the Upperchurch parish forum that the coordinates are:  Latitude 52.661014,  Longitude -7.95687.  I've mapped that location and am attaching that map.  If you could confirm that I've got the right location it would be most appreciated.    

I also have a recent picture of the church (will  attach) - looks like it is the same as that in the photoscanned copy you attached (pretty sure anyway).  

Reason I'm asking is that I've got hold of photographs of some of  the tombstones in this cemetery which I am in the process of transcribing so they can be posted online for others to use as a resource, but I wanted to be absolutely sure of exactly WHERE this cemetery is located before posting the information.  I find it very confusing when folks start telling me it's in one parish or another (they never seem to indicate whether they are talking about civil parish boundaries or religious parish boundaries) and well, it is just simpler if you ask me to use Latitude and Longitude.  

Tom, we cross posted I guess.  I can now see that the latitude and longitude I was given were wrong.  Thanks for the XY coordinates!  Is there a way to use those www.osi.ie maps to get an acurate Lat and Long?

Thanks!  I had already figured this out (and also how to convert OSI X,Y coordinates to Lat/Long)  but I had already zoomed in as close as I could using the 'Satellite view' but at a certain point, the satellite view peters out and tells you that it doesn't have any images at that level, so I didn't even bother trying for a 'street view' thinking it not to be available.  BUT!  When I read your reply this morning and you stated that you could actually zoom in and see the church/cemetery I went back in and looked again.  Didn't realize that even when the Satellite view isn't completely down to street level that you could still drag the little 'man' icon down to the street and see at that level, so I learned something new today.  Thank you very much for answering and pointing this out!

Forgot to answer your question about reading L and L from Google Maps:  

Yes, indeed.  Simply by entering the search terms Glebe, Tipperary, Ireland in Google brings up the map for it.  Then all you do is RIGHT click on the marked point on the map, Select "WHAT'S HERE?" and the L and L will appear in the search box.  In this case the correct (digital) L and L for Glebe is 52.659778,-7.952213.  

Using OSI X,Y coordinates has (up until now) meant absolutely nothing to me as we don't use such a system here in the States, so very glad to learn how to do this now!  It's going to be fun to use those OSI historical overlay maps and correlate them  to present day maps and see if and how things have changed!

You and I have corresponded before re my mothers side of the family (Burkes from Cahir/Cranna/Tubbrid/Kilcommon cross area).  Are you an Upperchurch expert also?  

This area is my father's side. (John Gleeson - my gt gfather Lowerwood/Pennefatherswoor/ Drombane) I have been looking so hard for Kilvalure and Templebeg cemeteries and with the use of the GEOHIVE maps here I have found them.  Thankyou so much.

I am hopefully meeting my cousin Paddy Gleeson soon to visit the above graveyards. If I get some dates would you be around these areas of Tipperary anytime in November.

I am definately booked now -arriving early on the 21st November and catching a late ferry back to UK 28th November  (Fishguard - Rosslare and vice versa).  At the moment my diary is free as I am starting to put my itinerary together now.  Could we arrange a day for me to call in to you at Portlaoise and share my research with you or will you be in Cahir anytime around that time?

I know Cahir pretty well from holidays there as a kid, but not as well as you will. I would like to meet you and share what I have as a family tree for any guidance you could offer as to where I could go next.  Alexander Burke (d1916) who is on the Cahir war memorial and buried in Ballydrinan old cemetery was my gt grandfather and he had an eventful army career, with the Royal Artillery, enlisting in 1896 and going through 2 court martials resulting in his leaving the service in 1903. (incorrigible and worthless).  He reenlisted with the Royal Irish Regiment for WW1 (family story is that it was under his mothers maiden name of Farrell (see the thread for pete farrell in the Cahir Parish section)and died of a burst stomach ulcer in Queenstown Military Hospital Cork on 12th February 1916.

On returning from British Columbia he married Bridget Quinn and they lived in Ardfinnan and later Kilcommon cross.  Their daughter Ellen was born in Droyleden, Lancashire while he worked at a foundry there for a short time.  He returned to Ireland and  settled back in Ardfinnan.   Ellen married the chauffeur (James Burke - Clonmel) at the Smith sister's house -Duneske.  He was much older than her and died early.  So the smiths asked her and her 6 kids to leave and she moved to the other end of Cahir.

Anyway that all for another day.
