My family originally came to Australia from Toomevara Tipperary arriving in Sydney on the 'William and Mary' ship on 4th January 1852. His name was Patrick Meagher and it appears his sister Anne was on the same ship. I don't have any date of births but it was listed Patrick was 25 and Anne was 28. Patrick's fathers name was Matthew and mothers name was Bridget from Toomevara. I don't have any other details on any other details of family in Ireland other than (place of birth was Ballybeg), but would love to know more.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The RC records for Toomevara parish start in March 1831 which appears to be too late for records for Patrick and Anne, I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were baptismal records for Maher/Meagher children with a father Matthew but none showed a mother named Bridget or a townland location of Ballybeg. There must have been a number of Matthew Meagher/Mahers in the parish.
You may want to add Patrick's story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection.

Have you tested your DNA?

Hi Barndog,
There a number of Meagher families in Toomevara today still going strong. I live a couple of miles from there but also have family there. Ballybeg is on the outskirts of the village of Toomevara. If you contact Nora O'Meara who lives in Toomevara at the North Tipperary Genealogy Centre in Nenagh she is the lead Genealogist there and can provide you with all the information you need and put you in touch with the local Meagher families. Nora can be contacted Ph: 00353 6733850 or email: tipperarynorthgenealogy@eircom.net
Nora is a lovely lady and very helpful and she'll be delighted to hear from you.

Hello Barndog,
An ancestor of mine named John Shortt (c.1720 - 1795) who lived in Pallis near Toomevara was married to a Mary Meagher (c.1726 - 1803) in 1747. If you have had a DNA test done, it would be interesting to check your results against mine to see if there is a match.
Regards,
John Shortt

Hi everyone,
Thankyou for your replies. I don't know anything about the DNA tests mentioned, are you able to advise further, is there any particular company or test you need to have done?

Hi Paul!
There are a number of companies that provide DNA testing for ethnicity and genealogy purposes. Ancestry DNA and FamilyTree DNA are probably the most popular. A DNA test will give you ethnicity info and also provide matches of people who share some DNA with you. Your closest matches will likely be 2nd cousins but you will also have many distant cousins (5th and beyond).

Hello Paul,
As Roger says, Ancestry and FamilyTree are the best known. I've found that Ancestry's test has led to more links than has FamilyTree's.

Hi John Shortt,
My 3rd great grandmother was Jane Meagher Lane Baker. b 1799 Killinule Tipperary.
her mother Sarah MEAGHER B 1775
Sarahs father Francis Maher died or buried 19 oct 1774 buried Toomevara
he was born abt 1741 and as "of Toomevara. he was married to Jane Davis
Francis parents were William and Sarah Maher of Toomevara.
These Meagher/Maher family were unlikely to be RC as the Lane and BAker family were Protestant.
can any one help add anything to this information
and I have had my DNA done so if you are interested in compairing John my gedmatch number is
M688733

Hi Della Palmer,
Thank you for your message. I've checked for a match with your DNA but the response was "No shared DNA segments found". My GEDMatch kit number is A574776. Perhaps you should try - in case I've done something wrong (I'm relatively new to GEDMatch). Lane and Baker are names that do not appear at all in my tree.
I was interested to read that you thought your Meagher ancestors were Protestant. Mine were but I had thought that Meagher was a Catholic name and that this might mean that eighteenth century times were more enlightened and less opposed to 'mixed' marriages than in more recent times!

Hi John,
Looks like we have some shared ancestry. My Gedmatch no. is A472986. Probably from 3 or 4 generations ago, I'd say. If you send me your email I'll send you an invite to my tree on 'Ancestry ', if you want.

Hi John,
That is interesting! However, when I put your kit number and mine into GEDMatch in both 'One-to-one' compare and X 'One-to-one', I get the response "No shared DNA segments found"! Am I doing something wrong? (I'm relatively new to GEDMatch.)
Yes, I'd be interested in comparing our Ancestry family trees. I'm hesitant about putting my email address on a public website. Is there a way I can message you? It doesn't seem possible through this site but I have found a John Abbott-Kelly on Facebook who lives in Nenagh - is that you? Alternatively, my Ancestry name is JohnShortt76 so you may be able to share your tree to me that way and I will reciprocate by sharing mine with you.
Best wishes,
John
