My great-great grandparents were both born in Ireland; Martin Mulvey about 1832, possibly from Roscommon, and Julia Hogan about 1836, from Tipperary. They were married in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1857. Martin’s father is given as Andrew Mulvey, farmer, and Julia’s father as Patrick Hogan, deceased.

In both the 1871 and 1881 census, the household of Martin and Julia included Timothy Hogan, born 1840 who was Julia’s brother.

I can find no birth records for Martin Mulvey or Julia Hogan on RootsIreland.ie.

Any help as to where these Hogans were from would be greatly appreciated.

  • I can find 2 matches for Tim Hogan (1838, 1840) and 2 for Julia Hogan (1833, 1834) in North Tipperary with a father Patrick, these are close enough matches to your criteria, according to the 1861 census, Julia is actually born around 1833, 1834, she gets younger in the following ones.

it's also possible the hogans are from the Cashel and Emly diocese part of the county and their records are not online, they are however transcribed and can be searched by the Tipperary Family History Research centre in Tipperary Town, they have a website www.tfhr.org and you can email them, there is a charge.

    good luck
