Hello everyone!

My great grandparents, John Smith and Mary Darcy, came to Australia in the mid 1860s from the Terryglass/Lorrha region.

My great grandmother Mary Darcy was baptised in Terryglass in 1846 and her parents were James Darcy and Catherine Mara. Travelling further back in time, I believe James Darcy, baptised 1827, was the son of William Darcy and Judy Manning (Mannin/Mannion). From the Tithe Applotments of 1825, William was living in the townland of Cornalack, next to Drominagh where there were 3 other Darcy men.

I'd be very happy to hear from any other Darcy descendants who might have links to William and Judy, my greatx3 grandparents.

Cheers,

Mario

  • Bill,

Thank you very much for your help. Some background information that might be of interest...

As mentioned previously, Mary Darcy, baptised on 19 April 1846 in Terryglass, was born to James Darcy and Catherine Mara - her godparents were a Thomas Madden and Judith Darcy. I'm now almost certain that the James Darcy who was baptised on 10 October 1827, born to William Darcy and Judy Manning - godparents Martin Flannery and Winny Quirk - is Mary's father.

The reason that I believe this William and James to be Mary's grandfather and father respectively is the people who were also living at Cornalack at the time (circa 1827). There was a Denis Quirk (see James' godmother surname) and a several members of the Cahalan family. This Cahalan family is interesting in that they too moved out to New South Wales. As a big coincidence, it was a Michael Cahalan, the son of the Michael Cahalan at Cornalack in 1825, who sponsored my great grandfather and husband of Mary Darcy, John Smith of Lorrha, in his move out to Australia. John in turn sponsored Mary Darcy, they got married and the rest, as they say, is history!

Please pass on these details to any Darcys still living in Terryglass - it would be very interesting to see if and how we might be connected.

    Cheers, Mario

  • Hi Mario

Thanks for that information, I see from my records that Mary Darcy !846 had at least three siblings born between 1846 and 1856 namely Catherine, William and Bridget a William Darcy father James Darcy married a Julia Tierney of Cornamult in 1877 but I cannot find any record of children his occupation is described as Coachman

There is a William Darcy in 1901 census employed by a Hickie family of Slevior but no sign in 1911 census

Will see if I can get any information on her sisters Bridget and Catherine

  • Bill,

Thanks for the information regarding Mary's siblings. I knew of William and also a brother Denis (b.1859) and sister Kate (b.1862), both who were baptised in Lorrha. However I was not aware of Bridget and have been unable to track her down in Ancestry of by looking through the Terryglass parish registers. Would you have a date of baptism for Bridget and also Catherine as I have Catherine being baptised in 1862 rather than between 1846 and 1856?

Interesting about William and it gives me a line to follow; another one to add to my list!

    Cheers, Mario

  • Hi Mario,

My research indicates that  William Darcy 1780 -1864 and Judy Manning, had a daughter Anne 1818 -1903. Ann married Michael Hogan 1820 -1897. This couple were my maternal gg great grandparents.

     Regards.

  • Hi Liam,

As Ann was the daughter of William and Judy that would mean she was the sister of James Darcy, my greatx2 grandfather. Following on from that, Ann was the aunt of my great grandmother Mary Darcy, and therefore she is my greatx3 aunt.

    Hello fourth (or fifth?) cousin!

Obviously on my maternal side, Mary arrived in New South Wales in 1866. I note from your message that you're in Stonepark which as far as I can tell is in Canada. Was it Ann that emigrated or one of her descendants?

    Cheers,

    Mario
