I am looking for information about my Great Grandparents - Michael and Mary Jane (Loughnan) Cleary.  They Were married at St. Mary's Cahir Diocese of Waterford & Lismore on February 25th, 1906 and had 2 girls - Mary Anne (born 8/24/07, baptized 8/25/07) and Ellen (born 11/25/08, baptized 11/26/08) both baptisms were in St. Mary's Cahir, Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.   I believe Michael Cleary died in Clonmel in May of 1909 leaving Mary Jane Cleary a widdow on the 1911 census where she is listed as living at 10 Market Street Cahir Ireland with 2 children - Mary and Ellen who were 3 and 2 years old on the census.  After that I can find no record of Mary Jane's death but here girls (Mary Anne is my grandmother) did not know their parents names and were orphaned at a very young age.  The family story goes that they were raised in a Catholic orphanage.  They left Tipperary in 1925 on a ship to New York, and the passenger list names Patrick Cleary of Tipperary as their nearest relative.  Any information you could give me about Michael and Mary Jane (Loughnan) Cleary would be deeply appreciated.   My aunt wrote to St. Mary's in Cahir and obtained the marriage and birth certificates above - but she now has Alzheimers, and I cannot get any further information from her.  I would like to know Michael Cleary's death date, parent's and siblings names, and the same for Mary Jane (Loughnan) Cleary who listed Tipperary as her birthplace on the 1911 census.  Thanks for any help you can give me, Mary Anne I

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Michael's death was registered in the second quarter of 1909. You would have to write to the General Register Office to get a copy of the record. Costs around 4 euros. I can provide instructions. No guarantee but I located a civil death index record which may be for Mary Jane Cleary. See below. Also found the 1906 civil marriage index record. A copy of the record would show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living when married. See below.

  • Roger:  Thank you so much for all the information.  Does a Civil Death Record have the names of the deceased person's parents on it?  I would like to get a copy of Michael's Civil Death Record and also the Civil Marriage Record.  As for the death record you found for Mary Cleary - I am not sure it's right because Mary Jane Cleary listed her age in 1911 Census as 26 so the death age on the one you found doesn't match what she would have been in 1918.  Is there any other way I can find out her death date?  I have her address as being 10 Market Street, Cahir, Tipperary on the 1911 census.  Could you please give me the instructions on how to order Michael's Death Record and their Marriage Record?  One last thing, do you know of any Catholic Orphanages in Tipperary at that time period - 1911 to 1924 that I could contact to see if I can find information on the 2 daughters Mary Anne and Ellen?  You have been so very helpful - Thanks and God Bless you for your efforts!  Mary Anne I

  • Mary Anne:

A death record has the following info: name of deceased, townland where they lived., age (provided by informant), cause of death and name of informant and sometimes the relationship of the informant to the deceased. Parents names are not provided.

The age was provided by the informant and they may not have known her exact age. Also, this may not be her death record.

Let me send an e-mail to someone who might know about orphanages in Tipperary.

For copies, go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx  print out the form needed, fill it out to the best of your ability and include the info from the index record. Make sure you only ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. You have to mail the request to Ireland (address provided when you print the form) but you can ask GRO to e-mail the copy back. I provide a credit card number and never had any issues.

  • Hi Tom, Greetings from Delaware, USA,

Thanks for all your information.  I think after looking at the 1911 census for Mary Jane that James' last name is O'Loughlin not O'Loughnane, and when I enlarged the handwriting on the computer it says he was the "foster father to the widdow Cleary"  so I am wondering if he was the second husband of her mother - not her biological father.  Her maiden name seems to be Loughnane.  I think she would have been born in 1884 or 1885 in Tipperary (as per the census).  As for Michael, I am guessing that he may have had a brother named Patrick so I am looking at the 1901 census for a Michael and a Patrick together.  I will need to send for the civil marriage certificate of Michael and Mary Jane (Loughnane) Cleary to get their fathers' names - maybe that will give us a clue about whether we are related.  These are my g.grandparents.  My grandmother Mary Anne and her sister Ellen were orphans at a young age in Ireland.  They came to New York in 1925 but did not know their parents names.  My grandmother died at 32 years old, so I never met her.  My Aunt (her daughter) sent to the St. Mary's Cahir  church for her's and Ellen's baptismal records and I think that's how she found out their parent's names.  It seems as though they must have been pretty young when they were orphaned not to remember their parents names.  The ship manifest listed an Uncle Patrick Cleary of Tipperary as their nearest relative.  They thought their dad (Michael) died in some kind of accident.  So I am guessing that's his death record and will probably send for it, too.  I guess they didn't have any close relatives that could take their children in when they died - maybe Mary Jane had no siblings that could help her?  And maybe Patrick Cleary could not help them either?  I would love to know their story. When I get the marriage certificate and death certificate I will let you know the information they reveal.   Thanks for all the help you have give me - maybe we will find out we are related in the future, God Bless,

  • Hi Tom, Thank you for all your help and information you recently sent.  I am wondering if you can help me with a new Death Date for Michael Cleary - Ireland Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958, Volume 3, Pg 417, GS Film No. 0101605, Digital Folder No. 004201709, Image No. 00072.  It has a date of death from April-June 1911.  I guess he would have had to die April 1st to be my Michael Cleary because the census was dated April 2nd, 1911 where Mary Jane is listed as a widdow, but I'd like to check it.  I think the death record you have for Mary Jane Cleary is not the right one.  Her children were orphans and did not know their parents names.  When they left Ireland in 1925 they listed Patrick Cleary of Tipperary as their nearest relative.  The certificate for Mary Jane that you have says she died in 1938.  I will keep digging for info on her.  I am also wondering if you have any new info on whether Alice Loughnane - your g.grandmother - was related to Mary Jane and James Loughnane?  I would love to know their story - are there any older relatives of yours that might have known them?  Thank you for all your work.  I hope the love of God shown in the coming of Jesus for us floods you and your family's heart this Christmas!  Thanks, Mary Anne

  • Mary Anne.

The house where Mary Jane Cleary and her two daughters lived in on Market Street in 1911 was on the same side of the Market Street that I was born and only four doors away.

I have attached copies of The Marriage  record at Cahir 1906 and the death record for Michael 1909.

I have also included other records that may be relevant but I am not sure..

I hope this can enable you to progress your search.
