Horan - Thank you for your interest.  Here is the list of the children of Edward (Ned) TREACY and Margaret DELAHUNTY.  I will give more information in other postings.  When you see the change of the surname spelling to TRACY, that is when the children were born in New York City and the spelling changed.  All of the children died in America.

Hi Eamonn,

Thank you for the information.  The first FOUR children (all 10 kids are listed above in another posting) were born/baptized in the Roscrea area.  The first was Anne Elizabeth and the second was Michael J.  Should I assume that Edward and Margaret named the first two after Edward's parents???  The next two born in Roscrea were John and then James.  Edward and Margaret and these four children came over to New York City, in 1860 (have not found them on any passenger list).

The first child born in New York City was Edward F. in January 1861.  The next five children followed.  Four of the children died in New York City as young children; John (6 yrs) and James (4 yrs) in 1863 and then Rody in 1872 and Maggie in 1874.  Both were 2 years old.  I tell you this because my gut tells me that the father, Edward, left the family because of losing 4 kids.  It must have been a great difficulty to bury 4 children (he did pay for a grave) and have 6 kids still at home.  I think Margaret was a stronger person, and let's face it, with 6 kids to take care of, she probably didn't have any time to mourn.  Edward left the family sometime between 1875-1880 and wound up destitute and in an Almshouse in 1896 and died there in 1902.  How I wish I could know more of their story.  I will continue in another posting.

Hi Eamonn,  It's me again...

What I would really like to find would be Edward Treacy and Margaret Delahunty's parent's names and birth info.  From Edward's info that I have, he was born in Tipperary (no other info) probably in January 1821, but there could be a good 6 year leeway.  Different bits of info state different birth years, including 1820,1821,1824, and 1827!  Edward's Almshouse admission record states that his father was a farmer (no name for either parent) and that he had a sister and a brother.  I don't know if either sister or brother came to America, or stayed in Ireland.

For Margaret Delahunty, she also 'used' different birth years, but in the 1870 Federal Census for New York City, she says that she was born in 1827, so I use that year for her birth year.  I don't know her parent's names, but I do know she had one sister that never married, Anne, who was born in 1835 (according to the 1880 Federal Census for NYC) and Anne lived with Margaret and the children.  There are 2 Delahunty's listed as witnesses for baptisms in Ireland... one is Michael and the other is Honora.  I don't know if Michael and Honora are siblings of Margaret, but I'm just putting it out there.  I also don't know if they came to America.  I do know that there is an Alice Delahunty also living with Margaret and the children in the 1880 Federal Census for NYC, and it says that she is the niece of Margaret, so I don't know who Alice's father would be.

I will be looking through the records that I can find online and I thank you for any direction you can give me.

You did mention . . Moneygall . . . they have their own Church . . (10 miles)

So also does Dunkerrin have its own Church (5 miles)

Roscrea – Mount St. Joseph Monastery, It's Early History

One of Cromwell’s soldiers named Heaton, by letters patent, became possessor of Mount Heaton (now Mount St. Joseph), the subject of the present reference; on confiscation from The O’Carroll, a local chieftain. The fine estate, with its splendid modern mansion of Elizabethan architecture, changed heads repeatedly during the succeeding three centuries, from Heaton to Armstrong, then Taylor, then Head, and finally to Miss Walshe, a Catholic lady, from Kilkenny, who decided to sell the estate, and die as she lived in the south of France. Some time previous Count Moore of Morresfort, expressed a wish to establish a second Cistercian community in Ireland, and this estate presenting itself, the opportunity was availed of, in conjunction with the present venerable Lord Abbot of Melleray. It was ultimately decided to purchase Mount Heaton. This was effected in ’78, and the name changed to the more appropriate, Mount St. Joseph.
