Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to read my message.  I am looking for information on Margaret Fitzgerald b 1837 . Her parents were John Coote Fitzgerald & Julia Kahegire.  I believe she had an older sister named Mary.  I have no details for John & Julia's deaths.

Margaret arrived in melbourne, Australia on 14 May 1849 as an
Irish Famine Orphan".  She married a convict Jeremiah Marsden in 1850.

I am trying to find if she was sent from a workhouse, if so, which one?

How would I go about finding this information?

Regards

Diane

  • Diane, the surname of the mother is unusual, records for the period are incomplete so any finding has to be taken carefully, also the Coote in the fathers name is unusual, there was a Lord Coote of where Cootehill in Cavan got its name, he had other places also including Galway.

There are only two Margaret Fitzgerald baptisms found to a John and Julia, one in 1835 in Rathcormac, Cork mother Julia Mahoney (common name) and the other in 1840 in Aghada parish also in Cork. Mother is Julia Dwane.

Some areas have workhouse records that survive but Cork would not be great.
