Great grandfather Ambrose Delany immigrated to Australia sometime in the 1850s, probably with his brother James.  Parents were Michael Delany & Bridgit (or Eliza) Kyte.  Any information welcome.

Ambrose married Mary Ryan who arrived in Melbourne around 1865, and may also have been from Nenagh.  They were married in 1867.  Ambrose worked in Melbourne as a plasterer for a period of time before becoming a hotel and storekeeper near Ballarat.  He died in 1884.

  • Hello Leoni,

I went on www.rootsireland.ie and put in ambrose delaney with no date.  It came back with 6 hits with that name however all records are from dates 1890 - 1905.

All records are from Co. Tipperary, so you are on the right track.

I found one james delaney in County tipp with father michael and mother Bridget, however the date was 1876.

What I would suggest to you is go through all the passenger lists in Australia (they have wonderful records).  So you know if they were assisted passengers? Do you know what state they arrived at?  Records were kept at the port of arrival so look at these and keep an open mind regarding dates. Widen your parameters.

The name Ambrose is a little unusual so may jump out at you.

At this stage I believe you may do better with the port of arrival.

    HOpe this help a little,

    Anne

  • Dear Anne

Thank you so much for your comments and help - very helpful indeed!  Yes, Ambrose is quite unusual and it has helped in my researches.  I have checked shipping records and while I have found one Ambrose Spencer Delaney on a ship arriving in Melbourne, I have some doubts about this - and I am still working on the shipping records for all relevant Australian ports.  The middle name Spencer "worries" me as I have no other reference to this second name to support this person as being my Ambrose.

I have now established that Ambrose was in Victoria (Aust) as early as 1857, and I have an estimated birth date of 1834.

Michael and Bridget (aka Elizabeth, nee Kyte) Delaney are named on Ambrose's wedding certificate as his parents.  Ambrose married Mary Ryan (also from Nenagh) in 1867, not long after her arrival in Melbourne. Witness to their marriage is Catherine Delaney, Ambrose's sister.  (My suspician is that Mary and Catherine may have come from Ireland together, and I am still checking shipping records.)

But the James Delaney you have found with the same parents is mysterious and confusing.  I have a James Delaney accompanying Ambrose in his enterprises in Victoria around this time 1860s/70s and I have assumed their connection as brothers - although James' did not always share Ambrose's business skills, and I think may have been dependent upon Ambrose in some way.   But your James, while having the same parentage, is much too late to be my James.   Do you have any thoughts on this information?

Again, with much appreciation ... Leonie
