Searching for family of Thomas Fogarty, b.1824 in Nenagh. He enlisted in the 69th Foot at Tralee on 22nd of June 1842. They were in Ireland until 1845 when they moved to Portsmouth. Thomas transferred to the 59th Foot in 1847 to serve with an elder brother in Ireland. In June 1849 they had a 8 month trip to Hong Kong and Thomas servered there for approximately 3 yrs only. He rejoined the service companies in April 1858. don. know his whereabouts just prior but my Great Grandmother, Mary Fogarty, was born March 22 in 1858 or 59 supposedly in China.
His regiment left China for the Cape of Good Hope from 1859-1861. They returned to England in December of 1861 and Thomas reached his 21st year of service and in 1863 at Aldershot he opted to discharge out to pension. His intended place of residence is shown as "Hamilton N.B." Not sure if "N.B." stands for New Brunswick? There is a Hamilton Pennsylvania, and Ohio, USA where Mary Ann is found in census records and is listed as born in China. She died in Akron, Ohio on March 11, 1950. Family legend says she came to North America when she was 6 yrs. old = 1863 plus or minus. Do not know mother's first name, why she was in China, whether or not mother died there at birth. May be relationship with Ryans or Duffys in U.S.

N.B. was also an abbreviation for North Britain, ie Scotland. It's fallen into disuse these days but you will see it on censuses and other documents in the 1800s. There is a Hamilton in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Could he have gone to live there for some reason?
