Greetings from Sunny Queenslad- it is another bright spring day here!

I am researching the Bowler/Douglas families from Nenagh.

Patrick Bowler (1806-1876) lived in 23 Grace's St  Nenagh (Griffith's Valuation Record 1853).  He maried Margaret Douglas on the 1st February 1835 in the Catholic Chursh-witnesses Jim Grace and Ellonor Deane. I don't have any details about Patrick and Margaret's parents or siblings.  Margaret Douglas died on the 9th April 1884-she was listed as a farmer's widow and was living in Grace's St.  The death notification was by John Power also of Grace's Street.

They had 6 children-Henry, Patrick (my great grandfather), William, Thomas , Julia and Edward.  I also saw mention of an inquest into the death of a Margaret Bowler in 1848-perhaps this was a daughter.

Patrick (my great grandfather) was assistant school teacher at Nenagh (1860-1866) and principal teacher at Carrig School for 9 years(1866-1875).  He emigrated to Queensland in 1875 and was employed as a school teacher until his death in 1903.

I would appreciate any assistance in getting more information about the Bowler and Douglas families.

Have a lovely day and kind regards,

Michaela

  • Dear Jack,

Thank you for your information.  I shall have to do some investigating to see how these Bowlers relate to my family connections.  It is good to see that there are still Bowlers in the area (at least in 1952).

I see you are a McDonald-  My surname is also McDonald.  Are you a MacDonald of Clan Ranald from Moidart?  My scottish forebears emigrated to Australia in 1852 from there.  The scottish roots are still strong in our family- my son plays the pipes  and my daughter is a snare drummer.

We also feel strong bond to our irish roots, with many irish forebears in the family tree.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply.  I will let you know how I go with investigating the extra info.

    Have a nice day,

    Michaela McDonald
