My grandfather Edward Barrett was killed by a hit and run driver on the Gortlandroe Road in August 1936. I think that there was an inquest and that the van driver was charged with manslaughter. This incident must have been reported in the Nenagh Guardian at the time. I know very little about my grandfather not even his DOB or where he was born so I am unable to identify him on the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The only facts I do know is that he married Bridget McMahon in Nenagh in 1914, had 4 sons and lived in William Street Nenagh. I would be so grateful for any information about him - many thanks

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is the civil marriage index record. The actual record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1914. You can get a copy from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. if you are interested, let me know and I can forward instructions. Also, with the father's names there is a better chance of finding the couple in the 1911 census.

Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx   print out the marriage form. Fill out the form to the best of your ability. Include the info from the index record: quarter/year of marriage/registration district and volume and page number. You have to mail the request to tGRO in Co. Roscommon (address provided when you print the form). Make sure you only ask for a copy of the record. You can ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you. I always provide a credit card number and never have an issue.

  • Hi JBM,

There is quite a lot about the accident in the Nenagh Guardian, the trial, inquest etc.The acciunts may be viewed on:

    www.irishnewsarchive.com

Unfortunately it is a pay website.

    Weeks ending: 05-09-1936, 19-09-1936, 26-09-1936, 10-10-1936, 09-01-1937, contain accounts.

On the site, tick the Nenagh Guardian only otherwise you will get a stack of results.

    Best of luck,

    Paddy,
