Looking for info on Francis Frank "Big Ben" Armitage who was born in Newton 1n 1747 and his father William who was born in Cork and died in Newton Mills.

Francis was married to Mary MaGrath about whom I know nothing and his father was married to Anne Connor, again, someone about whom I know nothing.

Francis's daughter, Eleanor, married George Young who was born in Tipperary. They emigrated to Quebec probably in the 1820's.

Any info on these people would be appreciated.

  • Hello, looking at old queries and in McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland it says this English name dereived from Hermitage arrived in Ireland in the mid 17th century and first appeared in Louth and Cork and has since established itself in North Tipperary and Offaly.

I searched Roots Ireland in the 1700s and only got one baptism in Killaloe, County Clare, this adjoins the Tipperary at Ballina, it was a Jonas, baptised 13th July 1742, father James and mother Margaret, Church of Ireland records of baptisms most often do not give the mother surname.

Marriages see that a John Long married a Mary Armitage in Killaloe parish of Youghalarra, is her address and is in Tipperary. Again C of I and date 7th March 1791, there is another marriage in 1800 on 30th Nov. He is Henry Armitage from Garrane, Kings County (Offaly) and the marriage is in Templemore, Tipperary to a Jane Davies from Killea parish.

We are really at the outer reaches of Irish records but if we knew the parish we could check what the C of I have available. Other than that land records will show where they were and there is a voluntary effort at Registry of Deeds Project (online as done) and a professional could search for any wills that may exist.

    Regards

    Pat
