I am trying to find out where in Co. Tipperary William Kelly and Mary Hickey came from.  According to their gravestone in Illinois, William Kelly was born in Tipperary in 1826 and died in Calhoun County, Illinois, on 26 January, 1896.  Mary Hickey was born in Tipperary in 1830 and died in Calhoun County, Illinois, on 9 July, 1917.  I believe their first child, Thomas, was born in Illinois in 1854.  I don't know if they were married in Ireland or Illinois.  No marriage for them was found on rootsireland.  I would like to find their place of origin so I could visit it on an upcoming trip to Ireland.

  • Dear Lois:

Many thanks for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

I have had a look through the Roots Ireland database for William Kelly born 1826 in County Tipperary.  There are 9 matches varying between years of 1821-1831.  If we go on naming patterns which were very common in the 19th century, and note that Thomas the oldest child might have been named for his paternal grandfather, the William Kelly born 1826 in Cahir County Tipperary has a father named Thomas.

Here is the entry for your reference:

Name:     William Kelly     Date of Birth:     24-Oct-1826
               Date of Baptism:
Address:     Not Recorded     Parish/District:     CAHIR PARISH
    Gender:     Male     County     Co. Tipperary
            Denomination:     Roman Catholic
Father:     Thomas Kelly     Mother:     Mary Conners

If that is the correct entry, and you might confirm with William's death certificate and the information contained therein about parents' names, we have a wonderful volunteer in Cahir who will be able to assist you.

    As to Mary Hickey:

The Mary Hickey that I have come up with was baptised in Ballylooby parish (adjacent to Cahir) in 1830.

Name:     Mary Hickey     Date of Birth:     31-Jan-1830
               Date of Baptism:
Address:     Not Recorded     Parish/District:     BALLYLOOBY PARISH
    Gender:     Female     County     Co. Tipperary
            Denomination:     Roman Catholic
Father:     Michael Hickey     Mother:     Johanna Burns
    Occupation:

I stress that these are not definite, but may match in with your family.  I am going to copy this post to our volunteer in Cahir, Tom Hussey who is terrific at assisting with queries and visitors.

If you have any further information, please post it here and we will do our best to help.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Thank you for your reply.  I know that at this point we can't be sure you found the correct William Kelly and Mary Hickey, but I did find another clue that coincides with the naming pattern you talked about.  William and Mary's children are:  THOMAS Kelly (1854-1928), JOHANNA Kelly (1857-1908), MICHAEL Kelly (1860-1940), Dora Kelly (1862-1941), Bridget Kelly (1864-1910), Elizabeth Kelly (1866-1938), and Catherine Kelly (1868-1941).

So since the first son is Thomas, the first daughter is Johanna, and the second son is Michael, that would support the fact you may have found the William and Mary we are looking for.  I will try to order their death certificates from Illinois to see if those list their parents.  If this is the correct couple, we would be very interested in meeting with the Cahir volunteer when we come to Ireland and hopefully finding their land in Tipperary.  These are the ancestors of my cousin's daughter on her mother's side.  My cousin is her dad, and our ancestors are from Corderry by Moor Abbey, so we will definitely be in the area visiting their land, too.

Are there any Cahir marriage records other than rootsireland?
