Hello!

My 4th Great Grandmother was Margaret Hickey who was b. about 1821/1822.  She went to the US before 1846 and married Daniel O'Neil  (of Tipperary) in Burlington, VT.  They settled in Au Sable, NY by 1850 according to the US Census Records.

According to Margaret's gravestone, she was a native of County Tipperary and it seems to say Parish "Rouen".  Unfortunately, that doesn't match any Parish in Ireland that I can see (I think it's in France).  I've attached a picture of the stone.

I don't know who her parents/siblings were, so I don't have any other clues at the moment and death certificates weren't required until 1880 (she died in 1873).  The Parish Records have about a dozen or so possibilities, but I can't find anything similar to "Rouen", even if it's a spelling mistake, nothing else seems close.

Any ideas/guesses would be very welcome!

Thank you,

Annie

  • Hi Annie

I searched www.rootsireland.ie/ for the baptism record and discovered that there is a parish named Kilruane in Northern Tipperary but it only has C of I records & she wasn't there.

There are no R C record for Kilruane in the nli R C registers I'm afraid

  • Hi Annie,  There was a  St Rhuanes/Ruanes church in the Townland of Ballintemple  in the parish of Donaskeigh up to 1900.

It accidently burned.   in 1901 the present church in Donaskeigh was built.

It is possible it was from parish of Knockavilla/Donaskeigh  your ancestors came.

The Kilruane mentioned by Col was also St Chronans.

Alsoo the parish of Cloughjordan has accociations with St Chronan/Cronan.

  • Correction to above post. fourth and fifth lines should read St Rhuanes  not St Cronans.

    St Cronan  assiociated   with Roscrea

    Apologies.

  • Thank you Christina! This all gives me some direction.  Here, at least where I grew up in New Jersey, our Parish was the same as the name of the church (we only had one RC in our tiny town).  What a great site this is!  Thanks so much for your help.

  • Hi Annie,   If your ancestor Margaret Hickey was from Parish of  Knockavilla/Donaskeigh. diocese of Cashel and Emly,  records for this parish did not start until 1834.

What I did find was a John Hickey in the townland of Lacken, about half a mile from the St Rhuans church.

Best of luck with your research.

Let me know how you get on.

    Christina.

  • I checked rootsireland.ie for Hickey records in the parishes Christina identified & found that the only parish which has records is Cloughjordan RC. There are 3 Hickey baptisms: William 1834 James 1837 & jeremiah 1847; 2 marriages: William 1833 & Thomas 1846; no deaths

Coughjordan Civil has baptisms Thomas 1899 & Peter 1901; marraiges Margaret 1888; no deaths

You might like to look at the Tithe Applotments (free at titheapplotmentbooks@nationalarchives.ie/) which has 382 Hickeys in Tipperary including James Lorenzo in Garruane 1827; Darby, Judith & William in Kilruane 1824; John & Margaret in Doniskea 1833.

  • Thank you!  I will check that out.  I may try and work backwards and start with her husband, Daniel O'Neil.  He was also born in Tipperary  (2/11/1822) so if he is from the same Parish, he was also born before the records started. He doesn't seem to show up anywhere in the Irish RC records. Daniel and Margaret married in the US, but maybe the families knew each other back in Ireland.  He lived until 1899, so if I can obtain his death certificate (they were required beginning in 1880), it may hold some clues.  Margaret passed in 1873. Unfortunately, there's no death record for her.   Thanks again for all the look-ups!  I'll keep you posted :)

  • Thanks so much Tom!  I'm really touched by how much people are willing to help.  It's very much appreciated :)

I'm going to log all this information and hopefully, my DNA test will eventually come up with some matches that can trace back to one of these locations.

I have the name "Roche" in my tree as well from Tipperary, but not associated with the Hickey.  So Rochestown is even more interesting!

Thanks again for all your help!!

  • Hi Annie,

Just wanted to let you know Margaret Hickey and Daniel O'Neil are my g-g-grandparents.  I also have been looking for the mystery parish, came across this site and just started searching.  This is quite exciting.  I suspect the photo etc that you have might have been taken by me as well.  Please leave a message here if my reply reaches you.
