I'm attempting to locate any information (birth, baptism, etc.) on my two great grandmothers; Mary Kennedy & Jenny Kelly.  My mother reports that both were born in Ireland, but believes Mary Kennedy is from the Tipperay location.  Jenny Kelly is unknown.

Mary Kennedy was believed to be born in 1880 and from Tipperary.  She married my Great Grandfather Edward Tobin and immigrated to the United States.  The 1910 US Census report shows her in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with several children:  my grandmother Mary Edna Tobin, Ethel Elizabeth Tobin, James Tobin & William Tobin.  My mom believes that my Great Grandfather was born in Maryland, United States.

Jenny Kelly was believed to have been born in Ireland as well and had a sister named Mary Kelly, birth location is unknowm to include birth date.  She married my Great Grandfather Oscar Klotz.  Their children; Eugene Raymond Klotz was born in Philadelphia 05/21/1911, Nelson Klotz, Joseph Klotz, Helena Klotz & Sarah Klotz.

Any information or ideas where to start woukd be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Edward Tobin was born in Maryland so the marriage had to occur in Philaelphia. I would look in Ancestry for the death record for Mary Kennedy Tobin. Hopefully she died in Pennsylvania and Ancestry has death records for the State of Pennsylvania up to 1964. The record should show her parents names which would help us in the search for her birth record in Ireland.

Same for Jenny Kelly Klotz. Likely her name was Jane or Mary Jane in Ireland but Kelly is so common, having the parents names is very important.

Let us know if you locate parents names.

    Roger,

I truly apprecaite the direction and will look into Ancestory.com for death records!

I will update you as soon as I find anything.

By the way, my daughter just arrived this morning in Dublin with her colleage.  This is their first time out of the country and I believe County of Tipperay & Cork is one of the many stops that they will be making along the way.  She has been sending back beautiful pictures of the city.

    Regards,

  • Roger,

I subscribed to Ancestory.com and was amazed at the information made available to help improve my serach for my great great grandmothers!

Mary Josephine Kennedy was born in Ireland on October 21, 1879 to parents Timothy Kennedy and Elizabeth Kennedy.  Elizabeth's maiden name was Baskerville.  She did immigrate to the United States, but have no record/date as of when.

She did marry on July 25, 1900, to Edward Tobin in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and lived out her life in the same location until February 5, 1957.  As for her parents, that is all the information I have to work with for now.

My mom had heard, when young, that her grandmother may have been born in the County Tipperary.

My other grandmother, Jennie J Kelly was born in Ireland on June 1870 to parents James Kelly and Margaret Kelly.  However, I was unable to locate Margaret's maiden name.

Jennie J Kelly immigrated to the United States bdetween 1888 thrrough 1891, married Oscar Willoughby Klotz in Philadelpha and passed away on February 9, 1951.  She may have departed from Queenstown, Cobh, County of Cork.

Anything that you can find would be greatly appreciated.

  • Stephen,

Where did you find records for your ggrandmother in Tipperary?.  My ggaunt was Margaret Ivers Kelly married to James Kelly at the church in Pallasgreen in 1843 but lived in Kileengallive .  James was from Scagg.  Margaret's mother was Mary Kelly married to Patrick Ivers.  Margaret and James  were a bit old to have a child in 1870 but there may be some connection if your family is from the same area. In the Griffith in  1853,  the Ivers and Kelly families were living in Killeennagallive, Clanwilliam, Templebredon, Tipperary. 2nd greatgrandmother Ivers and 3rd greatgrandmother Ivers were widows living next to James and Margaret Kelly.

I am trying to find Ivers relations in the area but have not been successful yet  We will be there again in July.  We have found most of my husband's family and have cousins in Cork.  But the Ivers are an ellusive bunch even though that name is not nearly as common as Kelly.

It is unfortunate that your great-grandmothers had very common surnames. I searched for Mary Kennedy baptismal records on Roots Ireland and FindMyPast.ie both subscription sites and did not find a Mary Kennedy with a mother with the surname Baskerville.  I also looked at all Mary Kennedy civil birth records from 1875-1879. There were well over 300 births and I searched all of the births in civil registation districts which are found in Co. Tipperary and I probably reviewed 70-80 records and although I found two with a father named Timothy, the mother's surname was never Baskerville. Frustrating!

I also searched Roots Ireland for any baptismal records with the mother as a Baskerville but there were no Kennedy children.

I did look at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation for Co. Tipperary and Baskervilles were all clustered in Youghalarra civil parish. The RC records for Youghalarra RC parish are on Roots and no marriage record for Timothy and Elizabeth showed up.

I know the death record showed Baskerville but I'm wondering if the informant made an error.

No baptismal records on Roots Ireland for a Jane or Jennie Kelly with parents James and Margaret.

Sorry I could not find the records.

  • Great Grandmother Update for Mary J Kennedy:

I believe that I have located both her Grandfather & Grandmother:

    • David Mannix - Born about 1825 in Kerry, Ireland.  Died May 1, 1889 in Portroe, Tipperay, Ireland
    • Mary Baskerville - Born about 1827, Ireland (location is unknown)

When David passed, he willed his property to his daughter, Eliza, wife of Timothy Kennedy.  The documents found in Ireland state the following:

"He willed his personal property, from Potroe County Tipperay - Farmer, who died May 1, 1889, to Eliza, wife of Timothy Kennedy, of Portroe Nenagh"

I believe Eliza, is short for Elizabeth Mannix, my Great Grandmother's mother.

    • Elizabeth Mannix - Born July 1852 (possibly in Portroe, Nenagh).  Died December 20, 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    • Timothy Kennedy - Unknown date of birth but US death records cite his name as being born in Ireland

Their daughter, my Great Grandmother, is as follows:

    • Mary J (Josephine) Kennedy - Born October 21, 1879 (possibly Portroe, Nenagh, Tipperary).  Died February 15, 1957 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    • Edward I Tobin - Born 1869 in Maryland.  Died November 11, 1919 in Philadelphia Pennsylnavia.  His death certificate reference both his mother and father as being born in Ireland.

My Great Grandfather's parents are as follows:

    • James H. Tobin - Born about October 1836 (possibly in Enniscorthy, Wexford).
    • Martha P. Lingan - Bord about 1840 in Maryland, USA

For my Great Grandmother, Mary J (Josephine) Kennedy, would it be possible to locate additional records as to civil birth, baptism, etc?

    I truly apprecaite the help!
