My 2x great grandmother left a stipulation in her will to try to seek out four of her children, each with the Walsh surname.  We never knew she had a family that she apparently left behind in Ireland when she came to the USA.  We also wonder about the circumstances that would have led to that separation.  The will was settled without finding those children.  I would estimate that the named children:  John, Patrick, Ellen and Mary were born between 1838 and 1848.  She arrived in the USA in about 1849.

I have no record of her husband's name in Ireland and am not sure if a marriage took place in this county or another.  She came from Tipperary according to family history.  I know quite a bit about her after she came to the USA but nothing really about her life in Ireland.  It is very interesting to me that we might have close relatives in Ireland, so I'm reaching out to find out if we might be able to connect.  I have had my DNA done by Ancestry.com as have one of my four brothers and one of my five sisters.  I am checking down that path in case some relative in Ireland has also registered their DNA on a family tree in Ancestry.com.

I have also just moved through all of the 1820 Tipperary church records for her baptism, but I don't know if she was Catholic.  Any suggestions or help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello again Jack!

I looked on Roots Ireland from 1838 -1848 for any Walsh baptismal records in Co. Tipperary where the mother's surname was Flynn. A few records popped up but the names did not match any of the four mentioned in your message.

Roots Ireland does not have records for some of the parishes in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly in Tipperary so their records are not all inclusive.

There were five Johanna Flynn baptismal records around 1820 but without knowing her parents names, there is no way to confirm any of these records.

  • Is there access to marriage records around 1837 that might give some clues on family, like the father's name.  Johanna (also known in some USA records as Hanna) Flynn or Flinn to ??? Walsh.  I am estimating a wedding date based on my guesses as to when the Walsh kids would have been born.

  • Hi Jack, Tipperary Family History Research may be able to help you.

They look up Catholic Marriages and Baptisms in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly for a small fee their e-mail is  research@thr.org   Nenagh in north Tipp have similar facility as some parishes there are in Diocese of Killaloe.

Best of luck.  Let me know how you get on.

    Christina.

  • Hi, you said you have info from when She came here. Look at those records first. The census will tell you where she is from Ireland sometimes it will say Republic or North or might even had location as you said Tipperary or a town name.

Then see if you can find the ship she came on that will definetly have a praent name or the townland. there are two pages to ship records so the second pg would have info.

Now see if she has a middle name, it is possible that Johanna is her middle name.  I have several aunts who only used their middle name and my Mom always used that name for them. I did not know their real name until 2008.  So when looking for records I would use the last name only and see if anything comes up for Johanna or Hanna as a first or second name.

Look on Irishgeaneology.ie it is a free site to see if you can find somethng for tipperary.  Do you have the townland or no?.

I will look a little for you to see if I find anything.   fidmypast.ie is a very good site I think it is 9.00 a month and you cancel anytime. I used that site to find so much information and cancelled when I was done.

    good luck
