I’m interested in communicating with any descendants of my my G-G-Grandparents James Fahey who married Ellen Dalton Tipperary circa 1830 and/or Timothy Ryan who married Mary Ryan Tipperary circa 1840.
My G-Grandfather was John Fahey 1836-1913 who married Bridget Jacobs c1862 and later married Mary Ryan c1869.   John came from Cappawhite and emigrated to Australia on the Renfrewshire in 1875.
I’ll be visiting Tipperary in May 26-28 2017 and would be thrilled to share a beverage or an email with any distant cousins in Ireland, or any persons who have these names in their family research.
Kind regards
Phil Mellifont

  • Good morning from Long Island, New York.

My g-g-grandmother was Bridget Fahey.  She immigrated to NY between 1830-1860 from Ireland.  Is it possible that your James Fahey had a sister Bridget who would fit that profile?  We do not know where in Ireland she was born.....she married Thomas McGuire of Ireland and they lived in Manhattan.

  • Phil:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on a couple subscription data bases and could not find the marriage record for James Fahey and Ellen Dalton. I also could not find a baptismal record for John. The parish register for Cappawhite  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0252 has records back to 1813 so if the marriage or baptism was in that parish, the records should have come up.

Since Cappawhite is on the border with Co. Limerick possibly they were from that county originally?

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Maybe someone in Ireland who is connected to your Fahey/Dalton line will respond before your trip. Have a great trip!

Let me know if you have questions or can assit further.

  • Dear Tom Hussey,

Thanks so much!  You've hit some gold.   The only record that would be incorrect is the 1913 & 1928 death records.   My John Fahey died in 1913 - but he died in Brisbane Queensland Australia, as did my Mary Ryan died Brisbane Australia 1928.     Most of the information about the family I have obtained from the (Australian ) death certificates for John Fahey and his wife Mary Ryan (attached)    On both records the informant is Philip Fahey my grandfather.

You have successfully located their marriage record, the death record for John's first wife Bridget 1864, uncovered the birth record for a (unknown) baby James b1864- this baby died 1864,  birth records for (known) children Bridget 1872 and James 1874 (both emigrated to Australia)

The records you have provided seem to match my information- so I cant thank you enough.    You have also identified locations Bonarea for Mary Fahey on their marriage, and Solohead & Oola for the baptism of their baby James.

I have three questions for you- Your second document is a repeat of the first... any chance you can again locate the death record 1864 for James Fahey and upload? When you open the second its is actually the same as the first.  also  can you advise what Catholic church would have existed at Solohead & Oola in 1874 and is it still there today?  and lastly is it possible to identify the church and location where John and Mary married in 1870 based on your attachment of the civil record?

I am truly grateful for your help.   Adding knowledge of the new locations might not be thrillimg for a local.. but it's great for my research and comes in time for my visit.

For what its worth- I have a photo of John and Mary... if anyone follows this link.. look at the bottom group photo... click to zoom in.. John and Mary are extreme left and right back row.

  • Hi Tom

    One more question-

On the record- "Civil Marriage Record for: John Fahy and Mary Ryan " (attached again) it lists the husbands mother as being "Anacarty"...  any clue what name that might be?  It looks like a transcription problem.

    see you on the 27th

    regards

    Phil
