My great grandparents were Henry Wilson, known as Harry and Mary Leamy, known as Polly, who was born in Cashel.  They lived with their six children in Blind Street Tipperary and after Harry's death in Sept 1907 Polly and the children went into the Tipperary workhouse per the 1911 census.

Harry was a plumber per the census, an engineer per the family, and there is a family story that he 'brought piped water into Tipperary ' and there is a memorial stone somewhere in the town to mark this.  Seeing the family lived in a very small house in Tipperary and were destitute after his death it seems unlikely, but does anyone have any knowledge of this?  Everything else I have been told has since been supported by my research so I feel there must be something to it.

I'm also having difficulty finding any information about Harry's early life.  Per the 1901 census he was born in 1863 but I can't find any record of him.

Does anyone have any information?

Thanks, Hannah

    Hello again!

Henry Wilson and Mary Leamy were married September 1, 1894 in Clonmel. Henry was shown as a plumber and both parties lived in Clonmel. Henry's father was Dan Wilson a deceased painter. I would contact the library in Tipperary town to see if they can assist you with the role Henry Wilson had in bringing water into the town.

  • Dear Roger ,  thanks for replying re this post too.  I have taken your suggestion and emailed Tipperary library and also Tipperary Studies which was mentioned on the library website.  I'll let you know how I get on.

Re the marriage of Harry and Polly I had seen a transcript of this but not an original (I use ancestry and it doesn't give links to the originals for some of the Irish records) The transcript records Harry's father as Ian Wilson, but you are quite right it is Dan Wilson.  At least that gives me some possibilities, not that I have been able to identify the right one after a quick search this evening, so I'll try again a little more logically.

  • Hi Tom,

Thank you for all the above.  I didn't know about young Henry's who died as a baby.  And one of those records has the additional information that my GGF middle name was Joseph.  I need to enter all this info in my records.  being on this site has made me realise how good  some people's research skills are compared to mine, I though I'd extracted all the available information but obviously not so.  It's much more exciting to see the handwritten entries rather than the on-line transcripts.

BTW.   On my post re the bakeries I've now found the information as to which bakery (see that post) which was Going and Smith.

    In much appreciation
