I have been looking for my father's great grandmother for nearly 20 years.   She first appears in the Ontario marriage to John Burns in Belleville, Ontario, Canada on April 20, 1863. Witnesses were Joseph Guire, Eleshia Byrne. Her date of death was December 28, 1911 in Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. The death record reported her birthday as August 11, 1843 - though that could be easily challenged. In the 1871 census her age is 28 so that gives some consistency.  It reports her birthplace as Ireland, but that is all. No records to be found in Canada give a county reference within Ireland. My dad has a 3rd cousin DNA match (noted prior post in this message board from cpa4fun) most likely to this line - high degree of certainty. That person has ties to Newport, Limerick (#3) with a James Ryan married to a Mary Ryan ~ October 16, 1869. Also in Tipperary.  I have looked in the nli and found a Bridget Ryan born in Thurles on August 5, 1843.  My question: I had incorrectly thought (aka dreamed) that if I ever found a place or origin via a DNA match that I might be able to narrow it down with an index. But I see 1000+ possible Bridget Ryans. Any suggestions? I'm not familiar with Irish genealogy and would take any suggestions.  Other note: some records report her name as Bridget Maria Ryan.  I can find no other known Ryan relatives of hers within the Canadian civil records.  It appears her immigration to Canada was approximately 1849.

  • Hi MareeMc

Ryan is native and the most common surname to Tipperary which makes it notoriously  difficult to research without proven parents . Unfortunately most guessimated their birth date as well adding to our woes ..

You state that Bridget emigrated from Ireland as a young child - Most children would have left with other family members .  Have you research the witnesses at Bridget's marriage ? There is a Ryan Byrne family in Newport ( Martin Ryan - Margaret Byrne ) Has your DNA match researched further back in Newport - as your match is fairly  close this might be worth persuing .

There is a free index on findmypast.ie - but you really need a hint of parents names to confirm which is your Bridget - Even narrowing down to baptism year 1843 brings 90 results https://search.findmypast.ie/results/ireland-records-in-life-events-bir…

Sorry for not been able to help you further your Ryan research in Tipperary but happy to help again if further information on parents can be confirmed
