My gggreat grandparents were from Killanigan Loughmore Tipperary. James Kirwan born 1790 and Ellen Brennan 1794 had nine sons and one daughter born from 1814 to 1840. Thomas, John, James, Patrick, Michael, Matthew, Andrew, William, Joseph, and Bridget. Five sons (I know of) emigrated to the Towanda, PA area of USA. Would love to know of any connections.

I located this 1863 baptismal record for a James Kirwan. The mother was shown as Mary not Ellen. I also located a 1901 census record in Killanigan which has a James Kirwan and his sister Nannie. Possibly the baptismal record is for the same James.

I will do some further searching. The online Irish phone book does not show any Kirwans in Killanigan but a few in the general Thurles area.

Forget what I said about the mother's name. I just realized that I'm one generation off. In any event, possibly the 1863 James is a grandson of the James born 1790. Maybe Matthew stayed in Ireland.

  • Roger, You are so kind and generous to look up info! Yes, Matthew Kirwan was one of the sons that stayed in Ireland. I believe, Patrick, Andrew, and Denis did as well. I appreciate your kindness and generosity!

    Sincerely,
