Margaret Hickey from Killenaule-Surnames Hickey/Ryan

I located the August 13, 1857 marriage in Killenaule. I also found a possible baptismal record in 1833 in Killenaule for a Margaret Hicky. If you don't know her parents names then we can't conclusively confirm this record. See below.

Thank you for the help, response and information. I think you are right on the baptismal, I don't have the family names and no way to know for sure. Likely it is her but in most of these searches from that time, being difinitive is hard.

I think we may be looking for the same families. I've been trying to research my 2nd great grandfather Thomas Connell (O'Connell) from Springhill, Killenaule. Based upon dates and repetition of family names in the Irish naming pattern, I have a pretty good idea that Thomas' father was Patrick Connell who married Ellen Keevan on 2-22-1819. They had at least 6 children, one of whom was Thomas (b. 9-11-1825) and another his sister Margaret (b. 4-23-1832). This Margaret Connell (O'Connell) married Patrick Hickey 11-29-1862 in Killenaule. The marriage was witnessed by an Edward Keevan and a Hannah Morris. Since Hannah Morris was the maiden name of my 2nd great granmother, I feel pretty confident that I have connected the right families. Hannah married Thomas 10-8-1861 so this would match up with the right timeframe for her to have been a witness at Margaret's marriage. I understand that married women were recorded under their maiden names in official church records. I obtained all of this info from the Parish Records for Killenaule / Moyglass. I don't know if any of this helps or if you still are researching the family.

I was in Killenaule and found a few O'Connell's still living there . I'd love to know if you have any additional information on this family. If this Margaret matches yours, we must be related ! I, too, have Ryans from Tipperary in my family tree so maybe we're related in more ways than one !

I think the Margaret O'Connell-Patrick Hickey marriage might be my family tie into the O'Connell family. Patrick Hickey most likely is Margaret Hickey's younger brother. Margaret Hickey(2ndggrandmother) married into the Ryan family of Thurles in 1857. I believe her father/mother was Micheal Hickey and Honora Sullivan. What may confirm this is the first born daughter in the Ryan/Hickey marriage was Hanora, traditionally named after the maternal grandmother. Odds are that Patrick Hickey is a member of that Hickey family. Margaret Hickey Ryan became a very successful grocer in Thurles before passing from Tuberculosis in the mid 1880's.
I was told that the O'Connell's and Hickey's ancestors held the farm in Killenaule and they were my 3rd cousins. The original Hickey homestead site resides on the existing O'Connell farm. To the best of my knowledge no direct named Hickey ancestors exist in the area. I think we probably share O'Connell relatives in Killenaule, maybe thru different family connections and lines. I hope that makes sense. You have a direct family connection, mine is through marriage(s).

I am looking to make a trip over to the area next year and fill in some family gaps and maybe renew some long broken family connections.

I must have misunderstood. I thought your Margaret was a Hickey by marriage. That's why I thought it might match up with my Margaret O'Connell who married Hickey.

You mentioned an existing O'Connell Farm. Is this in Springhill ? Do you have knowledge of the current owners?

I visited Killenaule a few years back but wasn't able to connect with any existing O'Connell's. If you come up with any living O'Connell's that connect to us I'd appreciate you passing it along.

I was told by a close relative that has since passed away about the O'Connell farm and the intermarriage with the Hickey family. My understanding is the family properties bordered each other and the current O'Connell family are dairy farmers. I traveled over in 2017 to Ireland for the first time and did not have a chance to make it to Killenaule. We are planning an extended trip over next year and will spend some time there gathering info. My Ryan side of the family is all Irish, great grandparents from the areas of Thurles/Toem/Killenaule /Dingle. Thurles seemed to be where most of my ancestral lines aggregated.

I do have an ancestry tree online, public, and I think some O'Connells do pop up as very distant relatives.  Anything I can do to help I would be happy to assist-Patrick Ryan
