  • Hi Ian

My great, great grandma was Mary Fitzgerald from Buffana, Killenaule & some years ago I was able to set up a database of Baptisms & marriages of female Fitzgeralds from the Killenaule registers.  Below is some information which I think relates to your Fitzgerald family.

Richard Fitzgerald & Alice Graham married in Killenaule on 4th February 1872 & had the following children (the given dates are baptism dates & the names in italics are sponsors):-

Mary  28.1.1873           John Fogarty & Johanna Rafter

Pat   10.4.1875             John Murphy & Statia Graham

Stasia 16.10.1877        John Guiry & Ellie Guiry

Richard 3.10.1880        Patrick Fitzgerald & Kate Nagle

Cath 6.3.1883              James Leahy & Cath Carey

Margaret M 26.3.1886  John Fitzgerald & Ana (sic) Fitzgerald

John 12.4.1891             Thomas Leatham & Mary Leahy

Occasionally the place of birth was given in the Registers & Cath's birth was shown to be in Kilnahone, within the vicinity of Killenaule I believe & John's was in Killenaule.

On the 1901 Census Richard & Alice are shown to have a son Martain aged 7, but I do not have him on my database.  I had a look on Irish Genealogy & found a Martin Fitzgerald born on 18th July 1894, mother Mary Fitzgerald but no father's name given. The birth wasn't registered until 28th September 1894 & was done so by Mary Ryan, "nurse, present at birth".

On the 1901 Census staying with Richard & Alice there was a Mary Ryan - Daughter & Katie Ryan - Granddaughter.  I have a marriage in Killenaule for a Mary Fitzgerald to a Stephen Ryan of Mullinahone on 16 November 1899, witnesses Patrick Fitzgerald & Statia Fitzgerald. Again I have looked on Irish Genealogy & Stephen, the son of Patrick, was a blacksmith  & Mary's father Richard was a shoemaker.

I hope this information helps you in your research Ian - who knows we may be related!

    Kind regards

    Doreen (UK)

  • Ian,

I have just been looking at my database again & have found a Martin Fitzgerald baptised 19 July 1894. His parents were given as Martin Wright & Mary Fitzgerald & sponsors were Richard Fitzgerald & Mary Lahy.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Doreen,

So we my be distant relatives lol, Firstly many thanks for taking the time to help me out with search, the information you have found for me is great and ties up some of my loose ends, i found that in Census for  Main Street Killenale there were houses 11,16,26,27 and 53 all with Fitzgeralds living in them, i think i may have to arrange a trip over next year and dig deeper to see if i can find the parents of Richard,

take care and once agian thanks for you time

  • You're very welcome Ian.

You probably know that in Ireland at that time a couple usually called their first son after the father's father & subsequent sons were often named for the father's brothers.  Given that & the fact that there were not a lot of Richard Fitzgeralds born the following may be your Richard's family.

    Father Patrick Fitzgerald

    Mother Mary Maher

    Children:-

Ellen (Mortlestown) 11.11.1845    Sponsors James Fitzgerald & Ellen Hogan

Richard (Mortlestown) 21.8.1848   Sponsors  Mary Fitzgerald

James (Mortlestown)   19.9.1852   Sponsors  Com Maher & Kate Maher

John (Killenaule)23.6.1857             Sponsors  Michael Fitzgerald & Eliza Dunning

When your Richard died in 1918 his age was given as 70 years old, which would fit in with the above Richard.though very often ages were not accurate.

There was obviously some connection witht Mahers/Meaghers & Fitzgeralds in the area as there were a number of marriages between various branches of the families & also they feature a lot as sponsors at Baptisms.

If you make the trip to Ireland I hope you have a great time & manage to find family there.  I try to get over every year, as I love everything Irish & am immensley proud to have been lucky enough to have an Irish father.

    Good luck

  • Hi Shelley

I see from Daniel Fitzgerald’s Army Record on Ancestry that his birthplace is given as Stradbally, Co. Waterford. Using the marriage details given on his Army Pension Record for his service in WW1, I have found his marriage on 10th May 1896 to Mary Gavin, at St Michaels Church Limerick, on irishgenealogy.ie (link below). His father’s name is given as Richard Fitzgerald (Decd)

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1896/10494/5822046.pdf

I have also found an earlier Short Term Attestation record for Daniel when he joined the Royal Irish Regt in 1893, which again gives his birthplace as Stradbally. This record also shows he had a brother Thomas who was in the Royal Artillery. There is a Military Record for him also on Ancestry (Fold 3). His place of birth was also given as Stradbally.

I hope this might help you in your research.

    Doreen
