I am researching Edward Ashton (1744 ABT Birth), Samuel Ashton (Shinrone Parish pre 1760) and Margaret Adair (Killenaule Parish pre 1760).  My information came from a 1783 East Florida Census (at the time a Spanish territory) which states Samuel and Margaret were the parents of Edward Ashton, whose trade was a "tailor."  Unknown if they were Irish on the Ashton/Adair sides or English living in Ireland at that time, but I do know they were Protestants.  I know this because In Florida, Edward wanted to wed and the Spanish were Catholic, therefore, Edward and his children from a previous marriage had to convert to the Catholic Religion.  I have invested quite a few dollars in previous research and am now retired on a limited income. At 65-years of age I would like to leave our heritage in Ireland to my children.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It is unlikely that church records exist back to the pre-1760 period. I would try to contact the Anglican churches in Shinrone and Killenaule. There is an active church in Shinrone. For Killenaugh, I can't tell if the church is active, you may want to contact the Diocese.

  • Hi JK,

I have just been researching my husband's ancestors and came across the Ashton name in my research. I am of the opinion that both Ashton and Adair were English adventurers or soldiers who came to Ireland under Cromwell in the 1600s. I am aware of Adair in Co. Longford but it could also be located in another county. If you google " Cromwellian Ireland " you will come across a book by Prendergast which may be of help.
