Any information regarding the families of my great-great grandparents Michael Duggan and Julia Fitzgerald, later of Ballypatrick, would be appreciated. Their son, my great-grandfather, was born in Kilsheelan/Kilcash area in 1860 and immigrated to New York circa 1885. Michael was a tailor with a large family, most of whom settled in New York. I visited his home in Ballypatrick and viewed numerous RC church records detailing the births of most of his siblings. Any help would be appreciated in firming out the family genealogy would be greatly appreciated.

  • Dear Clare,

I was recently in Tipperary (May 2016) and spent a week researching. The NLI parish records have been most helpful and I've found lots of baptismal and marriage records for the main players, but alas, I cannot find beyond a certain death. Several conversations were had with locals, and while the names were familiar, no one was able to help shed any light on what happened to the family. Their home still stands, having been passed on to the Gibbs family, some of whom I was able to contact but no real helpful hints.  I was to every cemetery and churchyard this past May and was unable to find any burial records or graves for Michael and Julia which is kind of distressing. I don't know what happened to them. Consequently, I've been especially sad that there is no visible record of their having ever lived and don't know what to do. If someone could be of help I would be most appreciative.

  • Hi Bob

You have certainly been busy!  It isn't unusual that there is no record for their burial - my own ancestors disappear prior to my g-grandfather but I know they lived in the same area as he did. There is no headstone or burial record but they must have a stone marker in the graveyard. I add flowers on the family grave as a way to remember all of them at Christmas as it is all we can do. There is no one old enough in the parish to recall them so I know how you feel.

I take you have already checked Find My Past to see if there are any records in their directories given the trade you mention as well as the Irish Newspaper Archives?

  • Hi again,

Sorry to have taken so long to reply but I'm currently on a holiday road-trip and don't have regular internet access. I will certainly look into those several instruments you mention and see what comes of them. Thanks for your help as I feel I need it.
