Hello-
I am trying to locate the origins of Thomas Considine, born 1820, or his father, who should be John Considine. I have been told there were three Considine families in Holycross in the old days, all unrelated to each other.
All I have is the 1853 Griffiths with a John Considine in Holycross as a clue. However Thomas emigrated in 1846. I know Thomas was from Co. Tipperary, he lists it as his birthplace on his US citizenship papers. Is there a genealogist working from Holycross Parish who may be able to dig up something on this family surname? Baptisms from 1820 are possibly still there. I will actually be in Holycross on July 31, my time is running out to find him.
If anyone can tell me anything about Considines from Tipp, I would be very grateful.
Thanks and best regards

Unfortunately the Holycross Ballycahill parish records only begin in 1835 so it won't be possible to get a birth record for Thomas. However I have looked at the John Considine in Griffths's - he is not listed as holding land - just listed with a house in Raheen townland. I looked further at John Considine in the hope that he might be a relative of Thomas. There is a death record for a John Considine of Holycross 12 Feb 1897 giving his age at death as 94 so possible birth date 1803- he possibly could be a sibling of Thomas. Its not 100% certain but it is highly probable this is the person from Griffiths.
The death record gives his daughter's name as Alice Currivan address Holycross and in the 1901 and 1911 Census there is an Alice Currivan living in Cloghane an adjoining townland to Raheen -

Alice's birth date is approximately 1862 Dates on census are not always accurate but this is earlier than civil registration so the only way to check it out would be through the parish records - However Alice's marriage record shows she married Pat Currivan in Holycross R.C.Chapel on 23 Feb 1879 and her father's name is given as John Considine.
There is also a Patrick Considine listed in Griffiths in Fertiana townland which is also very near Holycross parish so it may be worthwhile looking further at him.
This doesn't give any firm information about Thomas but it may be of some help eventually.

Clare, thank you so much for your researching this. I know it is a longshot to find my Thomas and John, and your getting the Raheen John Considine's birth and death dates does give me a big clue. If he lived from 1803-1897, it seems unlikely (but not impossible) he could be Thomas' father or brother, as he was born in 1820.
So John would have been 49 when Alice was born. That's not really unusual, but he may have been grandpa John. I also have a new contact in Thurles whose father heard a family story about his great grandfather Considine in HolyCross, who had a twin brother that emigrated to New York. He mentioned he had a sister Alice that also emigrated. Maybe this Alice was named for her? I imagine my friend is more likely related to this family than I am. I will forward your research to him if you don't mind.
I can't wait to come to see Tipperary, it will be glorious even if I can't find him. Again, thank you, I appreciate taking the time to help an Irish soul find his home. I still have hope.
Best regards to you, Barry
