I am looking for any records concerning the Patrick Kennedy and Margaret Cummins family.

I know their children were born in Parish Fethard, Tipperary County.

Patrick was born between 1760-1770 and Margaret between 1780-1790, both in Ireland.

Patrick died in Daviess County, Indiana, USA probably between 1835-1840.

Margaret supposedly died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between 1820-1835.

They had 5 children that I know of, all supposedly born in Parish Fethard.

They are: Edward Kennedy, John Kennedy, Thomas Kennedy, James Kennedy, born about 1810, and Hannah Kennedy, born between 1810-1815.

All children were born between 1800-1825, so they probably married around 1800.

I know Hannah married Lawrence McKee, but I am not sure if it was in Ireland or the US.

James Kennedy married Margaret McNally in 1833 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  I figure Patrick and family came to US between 1820-1830.

Patrick's parents may be James and Hannah Kennedy.  Not sure.  Would love to know the names of his or Margaret's parents.

Any birth, baptismal, marriage, ship or any records of any sort would be greatly appreciated.  I would love to know if we still have relatives there.  My daughter was just in Ireland and loved it, hope we can come sometime!

THANKS!

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message.

using the Irish Times website you can see that Catholic records for the parish of Fethard start as early as 1806:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Tipperary%20South&parish=Fethard-and-Killusty&churchid=263

You can also use the above link to see where there are copies of these records available. Most of the original copies are still held by the local parish office so it may also be an idea to contact the local parish priest for some possible assistance.

You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

  • Hi,

I think I have some connection to the Kennedy's from Fethard, because Ellen, Edmond, Thomas, Nicolas, William and Patrick were all baptismal sponsors for my Carroll family in Lisronagh, but I have not been able to find out how they are connected.  All of Patrick and Alice (Neville) Carroll's children  were born between 1815 and 1835, of which all the Kenndys were baptismal sponsors at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. in Lisronagh I think Alice Neville , prior to her marriage to Patrick Carroll was originally from Fethard.  Do you buy any chance have any Carrolls or Nevilles in your family tree?

  • Carol, At this point I have not found any Carrolls or Nevilles in our family history.  The McNally line that I have is from Longford, Ireland.  I think Margaret (McNally) Kennedy's parents could possibly be William McNally and Mary A. Scott??  Margaret (McNally) Kennedy (wife of James Kennedy) had at least 4 siblings possibly 6.  They were Anne b. 1812 in Longford, Mary b. 1810 in Longford, Catherine b. 1821-1825 in Longford, John b. 1816-1820 in Longford, and possibly an Elizabeth and Francis.  This is the most recent updated info. that I have found.  The following names appear in the family once they are in US and marrying:  Riley, Clark, Doyle, Coleman, McGrath and Cunninham.  Not sure if any of those folks or their families are from Tipperary County.      Mary Ann
